Honors English 10B Spring 2021

Ms. Stacey Stebbins Unit 4: Final

Final Portfolio Assignment

Purpose:
● Students will develop and strengthen writing by revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach to previous
writing projects throughout the semester. Students will focus on addressing what is most significant for purpose
and audience.
● Students will edit for conventions of grammar, spelling, punctuation, MLA formatting and language standards.
● Students will write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter
time frames for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.

Content: The final assessment of this course asks you to gather past work to show your growth as a reader, writer, and
human being over the course of this semester. You will be electronically gathering your work, working on revision to
further improve your reading and writing skills, and reflecting on your essays, while also thinking how you have grown as
a writer since the beginning of the semester.

What you will be doing:

● You will be revising ONE of the major writing assignments from the semester units with teacher comments. The
assignments you are to revise are:
○ Unit 1: Catcher in the Rye
○ Unit 2: Jane Eyre
● Culminating Reflection: You will write a 2-3 page reflection that identifies strengths and challenges of your skills
development, while also setting goals for yourself you can take with you next year.
Some questions you will be answering in your reflection:
○ What are the overall strengths of your reading and writing skills over the course of the semester? What
are some challenging aspects of reading and writing? How does all the work from the portfolio showcase
this?
○ How has your writing changed since last year? What do you know about reading and writing that you did
not know at the beginning of the semester?
○ Looking at your work as a whole, where can you see progress or improvement?
○ What is a goal that you can set for yourself concerning reading/writing that you can set for yourself for
next year. How will you work towards this goal?
○ What does your portfolio as a whole reveal about you as a learner (writer, reader, thinker)?
○ What did you learn about yourself through this semester? How have you changed as a person, or what
have you realized about yourself?
○ What are you looking forward to the most next year?
○ What do you think will be your biggest challenge next year? What are you planning or what can you plan
to do to take on that challenge?

Process: You will create a Google Drive folder to turn this in.
Rename it: “(Last name), (First name) - Final Portfolio, English 10B”
It will have the following items in this order:
❏ 1 – Chosen Essay Original Draft (your last name)
❏ 2 – Chosen Essay Revised Draft (your last name)
❏ 3 - The Culminating Reflection
What to do:
1. Create a new Google Drive Folder. Title it: “(Last name), (First name) - Final Portfolio, English 10B”
2. Next, find the original draft of the Essay you want to revise on Schoology and/or wherever you saved them,
download it and save it as a PDF.
3. Upload or move that PDFs to the Google Drive Folder you have crated.
a. Rename the PDF: “1 – Original Draft (your last name)”
4. Read through my comments and look at the rubric for the essay again.
5. Create a new Google Doc for “2 – Revised Draft (your last name)” and revise the essay taking my comments,
feedback from the rubric and your own observations into account.
a. You are allowed to copy and paste parts of your first draft into this new document.
b. Make sure to highlight changes you have made on the Google Doc
6. I will reread the original and the new version you submit to assess your new draft.
7. Create a Google Doc titled, “3 - The Culminating Reflection” and answer the questions above. You do not need to
answer all the questions, but you will need to reflect on your revision process. You should also reflect on next
year – your goals and what you are going to do to try to reach those goals. Your response will be between 2 and 3
pages long. The use of personal pronouns and informal voice is okay in the response section. The depth and
honesty of your reflection is what is most important!

Logistics:
This final portfolio will take the place of the final exam, so it will be due between the dead days and the final exam
period.
➢ 3rd and 5th period submission window: between Friday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 26 at 3:00 pm

You will submit the link to your Google Drive folder on Schoology. Go to Schoology > Unit 4 - Writing Portfolio > Final
Portfolio Submission

What now? We will still meet synchronously every class. I will give benchmarks and daily goals for you to
complete that day to keep you on track.
After I have finished the mini-lesson, the rest of class will be devoted to appointments for you to reserve if you
would like to discuss your revision process with me or if you have questions on my comments.
