BJT Differential Amplifier
OBJECTIVE
Construct and analyze performance of a differential amplifier in terms of Common
Mode and Differential gain and to evaluate its Common Mode Rejection Ratio.
EQUIPMENT

Instruments Components
• Digital Multimeter (DMM) • Transistors: 2N3904 (02)
• Oscilloscope. • Resistors: 10kΩ (3), 100kΩ (02), 330 Ω (1)
• Function generator. • Capacitors: 1 F (02)

THEORY

The electronic amplifier used for amplifying the difference between two input signals
can be called as a differential amplifier. In general, these differential amplifiers consist
of two terminals namely inverting terminal and non-inverting terminal. These inverting
and non-inverting terminals are represented with – and + respectively.

The output voltage of a differential amplifier is proportional to the difference

between the two input voltages. The differential amplifier circuit using transistors
can be designed as shown in the figure below which consists of two transistors T1
and T2. These transistors and resistors are connected as shown in the circuit
diagram. There are two inputs Vin+ & Vin- and two outputs Vo- & Vo+ in the
differential amplifier circuit. The input Vin+ is applied to the transistor T1 base
terminal input Vin- is applied to the transistor T2 base terminal. The emitter
terminals of transistor T1 and transistor T2 are connected to a common emitter
resistor. Thus, the two input signals will affect the outputs. The differential amplifier
circuit consists of two supply voltages but there is no ground terminal. Even with
single voltage supply also circuit can be operated fine as it is intended (similarly
while using two supply voltages). Hence, the opposite points of positive voltage
supply & negative voltage supply are connected to the ground.

PROCEDURE
1. Using a Multimeter, measure the value of all Resistors and Capacitors being
used in the circuit. Also verify working of your BJT by testing it with DMM.
2. Now connect the circuit as per the circuit diagram.
3. Differential mode Gain:
a. Connect the signal generator as shown in Figure 10.1 and apply a differential
sine wave of peak-to peak amplitude 10mV at 1 kHz to the input terminals.
b. Separately connect oscilloscope probe to Vo- and Vo+ of the circuit and
measure these voltages with respect to ground.
c. Then find differential voltage output as Vod = Vo+ - Vo-.
d. Then Connect Vin+ to the positive portion of oscilloscope probe Vin- to the
negative portion of the same oscilloscope probe and measure Vin voltage.
e. Then find differential mode gain Ad = Vod .
Vin
4. Common mode Gain:
a. Connect the signal generator as shown in Figure 10.2 and apply a common
mode sine wave of peak-to peak amplitude 10mV at 1 kHz to the input
terminals.
b. Separately connect oscilloscope probe to Vo- and Vo+ of the circuit and
measure these voltages with respect to ground.
c. Then find common mode output voltage as Vocm = Vo+ - Vo-.
d. Then Connect Vin+ to the positive portion of oscilloscope probe Vin- to the
negative portion of the same oscilloscope probe and measure Vin voltage.
e. Then find common mode gain Acm = vocm.
Vin
5. Common Mode Rejection Ratio:
a. Find Common Mode Rejection Ratio CMRR = |Ad|
|ACM|
