SCRIPT:
Under the Universal Health Care Act, which was signed into law on February 20, 2019,
all Filipinos are covered by national health insurance. Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,
the discussion on UHC was also timely. The current state of public health and economic crisis in
the Philippines is, in large part, the result of our neglect of the country's healthcare systems.
This pandemic has demonstrated conclusively that strengthening health systems through UHC
policies is critical to responding to pandemics and providing critical health services to Filipinos
without pushing them into poverty.
If fully implemented, the UHC act could have a significant impact on the most pressing
concerns of Filipinos. First, given that "staying healthy and avoiding illnesses" is already a top
personal concern, UHC has the potential to fundamentally change how Filipinos care for
themselves.
