Communities?

Book: The Hunger Games
How does our main focus “Poverty” relate to The Hunger Games?

The book “The Hunger Games” main theme is

poverty as well as survival. The main character
“Katniss Everdeen” and her family live in
poverty, their district (also known as district
12) being the poorest is the district that is
faced with the most amount of violence and
poverty. Katniss usually has to hunt for her
food, sometimes coming home with nothing
for her family to eat. This book discusses how
poverty had an effect in their lives as well as
the lives of her community which is amazing to
have in a book because it can be very eye
opening.
Poverty is the state of being extremely poor. There are
millions of people who have to through this everyday

What is Poverty? and for many different reasons. There is different levels
of poverty, some people are living on the streets, and
some people are struggling, but have a house and some
food.

The Poverty Line:

Here are two short videos about The Poverty Line in
Canada and statistics about Poverty.
What is Poverty?
It can be really hard to get out of poverty, but it is possible.
Here are some ways that people could take a new path:
What gets people in ● Start off with small jobs
● Ask any family in the area for support
and out of poverty? ● Try and find new classes to take, for learning new
skills. This can open up new opportunities

What is the likelihood of getting into poverty?

● Black and Hispanic people, those with lower
education levels, and women have a higher chance
of going into poverty.

Basic Statistics about Poverty in Canada:

- 15% of people with disabilities live in poverty
- 21% of single mothers raise their children in
poverty
- 1 in 5 racialized families lived in poverty in Canada,

Other reasons:

- Family business could fail

- Fired or laid off from a job
- Could get evicted from household
- Death of a household member who could be
holding up the family
- Unplanned pregnancy
Child Abuse:
What gets people in People who were abused as a child most likely didn’t get
and out of poverty? a good education. They were never taught how to be
independent or how to have a good life. These people
may not know the proper skills in order to get a stable
job.

Dangerous Communities:
Some people are just born in places that don’t have a
good education, no clean water, no nutritious food, and
no proper shelter. They can be born into poverty and
have to live like that until they are able to move
somewhere else and try and find a better life.
Inequality:
This is not a common reason, but it does still happen.
People can have trouble getting a house, getting a job,
and good education for their children because of their
gender, race, or religion.
How can things be more expensive for people stuck in

Poverty can truthfully destroy communities as well as lives,
people that live in poverty normally do not have good qualities of
life and lack most basic necessities which can be dangerous for
themselves and their families. This can affect their personal
hygiene as well as their Mental Health etc.

- Try to look for help when needed

- Seek financial aid from the government or social workers
What are some of the effects - Look for jobs as well as job opportunities that may be

that they live in.
What are the major effects of poverty?
- Some of the major effects of poverty include poor personal
hygiene
- Hunger or malnutrition
- Bad living conditions for example a broken down-home, or
a home in a bad and unsafe neighborhood
- Less likely to be accepted for job positions
- Higher insurance rates because of the area that you live in
- More amounts of debt.

These are just a few of the effects that poverty can have on an
individual.
The effects that poverty can have on families and communities.
Poverty is one of the largest problems that is faced in canada with
over 60% of the population living in it. These are just some of the
effects:

- Higher violence rates and chances of the gang and criminal

activity
What are some of the - Lack of safety, as well as protection for children and
adolescents
effects that poverty may - higher rates of being kidnapped and or sex, trafficked
have on an individual - Insurance may be more expensive for example the
insurance that you have to pay on a car as well as your
and the community that home.
- Fewer chances of a Good Healthcare systems or access to a

- fewer chances of getting a job to help provide for the family.
- Your kids also have a 25% less chance of getting into
post-secondary education if they do not get accepted for a
scholarship or financial aid.
- Higher chance of sickness and infection due to poor living
conditions as well as not great medical attention.

These are just some of the effects poverty can have on families as
well as communities, as you can probably tell this is a very serious
problem that affects over 60% of the canada's population.

something that negatively impacts that but when searching, is

finances:

affect your income - Most jobs that you will apply for, will require a criminal

sources? - Some job positions will require by law, a criminal record

search. Some of these job positions are bank employees,
insurance agents, real estate brokers, etc.
- If you are self employed, you can still be searched for a
criminal record.
- Some self employed jobs that will require a criminal
record search are ones that will have you working with
confidential information, jobs where you would be
working with children, Jobs where you would work as a
computer programmer, etc.

These are some of the ways that your criminal record can affect
your income sources and definitely, ones to keep in mind.
There are many ways in which your injuries can affect your

can affect your income sources are as follows:

- By law, the employer must reinstate their workers into

income sources? work, unless the employer regularly employs 20 or
more people, or if the person has not worked for the
company routinely for over a year.
- If a worker returns to work, and his job position is not
available, then the employer must give that worker a
job with similar pay and similar duties as his original
job.
- If the worker can not fulfill the duties that are
required in their job, then the employer must find the
First vacant job position for the worker, making sure
that the position does suit the workers abilities can
fulfill the new jobs duties.
- If the worker is at the age of 65 or above, then the
employer does not have to re-employ the worker.
- When you are injured, the WSIB (The Work Safety and

etc.
If a worker is able to back to their original (pre-injury)

job, or one that is very similar to their job.
- If you or another worker has been fired during the
time of 6 months since your/their injury, then the
employer must prove that this action was not because
of the either the worker was injured or because of the
workers compensation money that was taken out.

There are many ways in which your injury could affect your
work and/or income sources, but these are definitely some to
highlight. Some of these points can also be used if you have
contracted a disease of some kind while at work, which I
know will be useful for people, especially now.
Previously or currently living in poverty may be caused by of how your past
generations of family have lived. Here are some of the ways that past
generations of your family can affect your education and/or your wealth:
How can previous - A cycle of poverty is a loop of poverty between your family,

generations living in community, etc, where they can not break out of the loop because
they are too poor to gain access to the necessary resources.

poverty affect your - Schools that have lesser qualified teachers, will have students
generally do worse in studies, versus schools that have qualified

education and/or -
teachers.
As such the new teachers of lesser qualified schools, will be the

wealth today? students, this continues the cycle of lesser education and generally
brings the grades of the students lower.
- A study by Susanna Loeb from the school of Education at Stanford
shows that teachers that were outsourced are 10 times more likely to
leave the school in their first year.
- The Abecedarian Project was a study that showed randomly selected
children from low-income families, between being an infant to the
age of 5, that were put into a high educated and high profited school
,do better in cognitive tests and are more likely to attend 4 years of
collage, versus their control group of children of the same age and
similar income families.

These findings of the effects of past generation poverty and how it can affect
your education/wealth as you get older are definitely very important to
realize and a topic to discuss about when poverty is the topic of conversation
