CHEG 211 Chemical Process Calculation Homework #1

This homework assignment for a chemical process calculation class contains 10 multi-part chemistry and thermodynamics problems. Problem 1 involves calculating work, internal energy changes, and temperature for water stirred by a falling weight. Problem 2 asks how long it will take for water's temperature to rise with a stirrer delivering heat at a constant rate. Problem 3 involves calculating heat, work, and internal energy changes as air is heated isothermally at constant pressure.

CHEG 211 Chemical Process Calculation

Homework #1
Due: May 23, 2017

Not only answers but also how to get to the answers should be shown.

Problem 1) A stirrer in an insulated tank filled with 10 kg of water at 25 oC is rotated by

gravity (9.8 m s-2) acting on a weight of mass 30 kg. Assuming that all work done on the
weight is delivered to the water, determine the

1.1 amount of work done on the water

1.2 internal-energy change of the water
1.3 final temperature of the water
1.4 internal-energy change of surroundings

Problem 2) An adiabatic tank containing 10 kg of water at 20 oC is fitted with a stirrer that

delivers work to the water at the rate of 0.2 kw. How long will it take for the temperature of
the water to rise to 30 oC.

Problem 3) One mole of air is kept in a balloon initially at 25 oC and 1 atm. The air is heated
to 26 oC at constant pressure. Determine the

3.1 the amount of heat added to the system

3.2 the amount of work done by the air
3.3 the amount of internal-energy change of the air

Problem 4) The volume (V) of a fluid is function of temperature (T) and pressure (P), and can
be represented by V= V(T, P).
  
4.1 Derive the equation, 
= βdT − κdP , where β =  () or volume expansivity and
 
κ = −  () or isothermal compressibility
4.2 Calculate the change in volume of liquid acetone for a change from 20 oC and 1 bar to 0
o
C and 20 bar, assuming that the initial specific volume is 1.287 cm3 g-1, and β and κ are
constant at 1.487 x 10-3 oC-1 and 62 x 10-6 bar-1, respectively.

Problem 5) Air is compressed from an initial state of 1 bar and 50 oC to a final state of 5 bar
and 50 oC by three different reversible processes in a closed system.
(a) heating at constant volume followed by cooling at constant pressure
(b) isothermal compression
(c) adiabatic compression followed by cooling at constant volume

Calculate the work and heat transferred for each process, assuming that the air is an ideal gas
and CV = (5/2)R and CP = (7/2)R.

Problem 6) A stream of water is produced in a steady-flow mixing process by combining 1.0

kg s-1 of cool water at 25 oC with 0.8 kg s-1 of hot water at 75 oC. During mixing, heat is lost
to the surroundings at the rate of 30 kJ s-1. What is the temperature of the warm-water stream?
Assume that the specific heat of water is constant at 4.18 kJ kg-1 K-1.

Problem 7) In a steady-state flow, determine the change in enthalpy for heating 10 mols of
SO2 at 1 atm from 200 oC to 1000 oC.

Problem 8) Estimate the latent heat of vaporization of water at 50 oC using Clapeyron

equation and Trouton’s rule, respectively, and compare the estimates with that shown in the
steam table.

Problem 9) Determine the standard heat of reaction for N2(g) + 3H2(g) à 2NH3 at 100 oC.

Problem 10) Calculate the theoretical flame temperature when ethylene at 25 oC is burned
with 25 % excess air at 25 oC.
