Data Communication and Computer Networks Project

This document proposes a network topology for a hospital with 16 networks. It describes using static routing to configure the networks with IP addresses from the 172.16.0.0/12 range. The topology diagram shows how the networks are interconnected, with servers placed in the administration building. Access restrictions are implemented using ACLs to prevent unauthorized access between departments. DHCP, DNS and HTTP servers are configured to automatically assign IP addresses and enable access to websites and files.

Addressing Scheme:
We are using static routing to configure our networks in this topology and Using
the following IP Addresses. As we know in this topology number of networks are
16 so we are using a Class C Ip Address to configure these networks using static
routing.

Network # IP Address
Network 1 172.16.1.0
Network 2 172.16.2.0
Network 3 172.16.3.0
Network 4 172.16.4.0
Network 5 172.16.5.0
Network 6 172.16.6.0
Network 7 172.16.7.0
Network 8 172.16.8.0
Network 9 172.16.9.0
Network 10 172.16.10.0
Network 11 172.16.11.0
Network 12 172.16.12.0
Network 13 172.16.13.0
Network 14 172.16.14.0
Network 15 172.16.15.0
Network 16 172.16.16.0

Routing Details:
We are using here 5 routers as Number of Departments are 5 each department
having 2 floors so we are using two switches that are using 4 hosts (2 hosts each).
Nursing staff router is directly connected to all other router and so all others.
Servers are placed in Admin building so this can check the performance of all
other buildings. Nursing staff is making Network 1 which is connected to switch
and that switch is further connected with 2 more switches, with those two
switches there are two hosts each. Where as Admin router is making here two
networks which are Network 2 and Network 3. Network 2 configuration is same
as Network 1 but Network 3 consisting a switch directly connected to router and
with that switch there are 3 servers placed. Network 4,5 and 6 are configured as
same as Network 1 and 2. In Network 7 Front Desk router is directly connected to
Nursing Staff router. In Network 8 Nursing staff router is directly connected with
Doctors router. In Network 9 Nursing Staff router is directly connected with
Accounts router. In Network 10 Nursing Staff router is directly connected with
Admin router. In Network 11 Admin router is directly connected with front desk.
In Network 12 Account router is directly connected with Front Desk router. In
Network 13 Admin router is directly connected with Doctors router. In Network
14 Front Desk router is directly connected with Doctors router. In Network 15
Admin router is directly connected with Accounts router. In Network 16 Account
router is directly connected with Doctors router. This is how complete Topology is
configured with a safe connection in this way if there is some problem occurs in
any network other networks can manage the problem. After providing the IP
addresses to each network we will configure routing protocol Open Shortest Path
First. Then we check our configuration by pinging from one network to another
network. This is how we can implement our complete network design and can
configure it. We are using DHCP to help ourselves to provide IP addresses easily.

Server placements & Configurations:

Servers are placed in the Admin department basement which are DHCP, DNS and
HTTP server. DHCP server is helping hosts to set their IPs automatically by simply
making pools on routers so this will make life easy. On the other hand, DNS sever
is also placed which is used to request for required domain using IP address as
well as using specific keyword for that website. It’s not easy to remember IP
address for every website so DNS server is playing very crucial role in Networking.
There is also an HTTP server placed which is used to request HTML file by using
URL and IP address.

Access Restrictions Methodology:

In this Topology we are also implementing ACL’s to make the performance much
better. So, there are several points which we need to configure.
1. No other department can Access Doctor’s Network.
2. Only Nursing Staff and Doctors Network can access Front Desk
3. Users in Doctor’s Department and Nursing Staff can’t access Account
Department.
4. Accounts department can’t access any other network but front desk can
access Account department.
5. Router connected to Admin must be secured against any Telnet request
comes from other networks.
6. Switches placed in all the departments are well configured against any
unauthorized use.
We need to implement Standard and Extended ACL’s on this Topology to apply all
above restrictions. ACL’s help us to secure our personal data so we can keep it
safe ACL which is Access control list can deny or permit any host to host or any
network to network in this case we need to configure all above requirements to
build a well secure and well managed structure. We need to configure switches to
avoid unknown request. We can implement different security modes
1. Protect
2. Restrict
3. Shutdown
In protect mode we are setting if any unknown person is trying to access some
personal data, we need to go in protect mode for 2nd attempt it will restrict the
request and for 3rd request it will shut down the system.
