ON NANOTECHNOLOGY
Activity 1:
1. What is nanotechnology?
Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which
is about 1 to 100 nanometers.
Nanotechnology also pertains to the study and application of extremely small things and can
be used across all the other science fields.
2. Identify three fields which can benefit from nanotechnology and provide the specific ways
nanotechnology/science can be employed in these fields:
1. What are stem cells? What made them very special as compared to other kinds of cells?
Stem cells are the body's raw materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized
functions are generated. Under the right conditions in the body or a laboratory, stem cells
divide to form more cells called daughter cells.
Stem cells have more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, heart muscle cells or
bone cells which made them very special. No other cell in the body has the natural ability to
generate new cell types.
No, because when cells are removed from our bodies, they can be contaminated with
pathogens that can cause disease.
3. What can be done to arrest the effects of climate change? Is it still possible to reverse these?
In order for us to arrest the effects of climate change, we must increase the use of
renewable energy. By powering millions of homes and businesses, renewable energy is
reducing the threat of climate change and making the air safer to breathe. Many forms of
this do not emit any greenhouse gases or toxic waste in the process of producing electricity.
Renewable energy is a sustainable energy source which can be relied on for the long-term
and could possibly reverse climate change.
2. In your opinion, what is the most sustainable and environmentally friendly renewable energy
resource that the Philippines can use? Briefly explain your answer
For me, wind energy is the most sustainable and eco friendly RE resource that the Philippine
can use as we are the top producer of wind energy in ASEAN. We have also plenty of
potential wind farms because we are a mountainous archipelago.
Wind energy is advantageous because it is widely available, naturally renewed, widely
disseminated, and creates no corrosive carbon dioxide emissions while being in operation.
3. Do you think the Philippine should explore more the use of nuclear energy to meet its energy
need? Why or why not?
Yes, the Philippines should explore more the use of nuclear energy to meet its energy need
particularly the country’s dependence on fossil fuels. In addition to this is to minimize the
country’s exposure to price fluctuations. Another is to reduce harmful emissions and
therefore maintain a balance between economic growth and development and health and
environmental protection. Lastly, is to increase the utilization of renewable energy by
providing fiscal and non-fiscal incentives.
