FINAL ACTIVITY

ON NANOTECHNOLOGY
Activity 1:

1. What is nanotechnology?
 Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which
is about 1 to 100 nanometers.
 Nanotechnology also pertains to the study and application of extremely small things and can
be used across all the other science fields.

2. Identify three fields which can benefit from nanotechnology and provide the specific ways
nanotechnology/science can be employed in these fields:

Field (medical, engineering, etc) Specific Use

1. Medicine 1. Nanotechnology allows medicine to become
more personalised, cheaper, safer and easier to
deliver.

2. Energy 2. Nanotechnology improve the efficiency and

cost-effectiveness of solar panels, create new
kinds of batteries, improve the efficiency of fuel
production using better catalysis, and create
better lighting systems.
3. Automotive 3. Nanoengineered materials are in a range of
products including high-power rechargeable
batteries, fuel additives, fuel cells and improved
catalytic converters, which produce cleaner
exhaust for longer periods.

ON STEM CELL THERAPY

Activity 2:

1. What are stem cells? What made them very special as compared to other kinds of cells?
 Stem cells are the body's raw materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized
functions are generated. Under the right conditions in the body or a laboratory, stem cells
divide to form more cells called daughter cells.
 Stem cells have more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, heart muscle cells or
bone cells which made them very special. No other cell in the body has the natural ability to
generate new cell types.

2. Do you approve of stem cell therapy? Why or why not?

 No, because when cells are removed from our bodies, they can be contaminated with
pathogens that can cause disease.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

Activity #3:

1. Defined the following terms:

a. Climate – it refers to the general weather conditions of a place over many years.
b. Weather – it is the state of the atmosphere as it pertains to temperature, humidity, wind,
and rain.
c. Greenhouse gases – are the gases in Earth’s atmosphere that trap heat which became the
leading cause of the earth’s rapidly changing climate.
d. Global warming – it is the rise in the average temperature near the earth's surface.
e. Climate change – it is a phenomenon that occurs when the average temperature rises and
changes due to global climate conditions.

2. What are the drivers of climate change?

 Humans are the lead drivers of climate change and it is happening because of the activities
that being caused by humans. These human activities increase the concentrations of
greenhouse gases and particulate matter in the atmosphere which probably response to the
climate change.

3. What can be done to arrest the effects of climate change? Is it still possible to reverse these?
 In order for us to arrest the effects of climate change, we must increase the use of
renewable energy. By powering millions of homes and businesses, renewable energy is
reducing the threat of climate change and making the air safer to breathe. Many forms of
this do not emit any greenhouse gases or toxic waste in the process of producing electricity.
Renewable energy is a sustainable energy source which can be relied on for the long-term
and could possibly reverse climate change.

ENERGY CRISIS AND ALTERNATIVE ENERGY RESOURCES

Activity 4:

1. Define the following renewable energy sources (10 points)

a. Solar energy – it is one the alternative energy source that is used most widely across the
globe. Solar energy is also used for drying clothes, used by plants during the process of
photosynthesis and also used by human beings during winter seasons to make their body
temperature warm.
b. Hydroelectric power – it is simply the process of harnessing the kinetic energy from moving
water to produce power. Hydropower is classified as a renewable energy due to the fact
that the water cycle is continually renewed by the sun.
c. Biomass – it is the process by which an alternative energy is generated through conversion
of biological materials and wastes into forms that can be used as energy sources for heating,
power generation and transportation.
d. Geothermal energy – it refers to the energy drawn or harnessed from beneath the earth. It
is completely clean and renewable. Geothermal energy has been in used since last several
years.

2. In your opinion, what is the most sustainable and environmentally friendly renewable energy
resource that the Philippines can use? Briefly explain your answer
 For me, wind energy is the most sustainable and eco friendly RE resource that the Philippine
can use as we are the top producer of wind energy in ASEAN. We have also plenty of
potential wind farms because we are a mountainous archipelago.
 Wind energy is advantageous because it is widely available, naturally renewed, widely
disseminated, and creates no corrosive carbon dioxide emissions while being in operation.

3. Do you think the Philippine should explore more the use of nuclear energy to meet its energy
need? Why or why not?
 Yes, the Philippines should explore more the use of nuclear energy to meet its energy need
particularly the country’s dependence on fossil fuels. In addition to this is to minimize the
country’s exposure to price fluctuations. Another is to reduce harmful emissions and
therefore maintain a balance between economic growth and development and health and
environmental protection. Lastly, is to increase the utilization of renewable energy by
providing fiscal and non-fiscal incentives.
