Lesson Idea Name: Systems of Equations

Content Area: Mathematics-Algebra 1
Grade Level(s): 9th grade

Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE9-12.A.REI.5 Show and explain why the elimination method works to solve a system of two-variable
equations.
MGSE9-12.A.REI.6 Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing
on pairs of linear equations in two variables.
I want students to know how to solve systems of equations through substitution and elimination and how to
tell when to use each method and why they word.

Selected Technology Tool: Desmos

Type of Instructional Software:

☐ Drill and Practice ☐ Tutorial ☐ Simulation X Instructional Game ☐ e-books/e-references

Features of this software (check all that apply):

X Assessment Monitoring/Reporting
X Allows teacher to create customized lessons for students
X Multi-user or collaborative functions with others in the class
☐ Multi-user or collaborative with others outside the class
X Accessible to students beyond the school day
X Accessible via mobile devices
☐ Multiple languages
X Safety, security and/or privacy features

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering X Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

X Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I think that this activity is a great tool to help students learn for themselves why elimination and substitution
works and gives multiple means of representation to show what it means when you get a solution to a system
of equations. The students can go at their own pace. However, this activity doesn’t allow for the students to
represent the system of equation the way that they want to. This activity would be used as more of an
introductory lesson.

Lesson idea implementation:

The Desmos lesson is going to be an introductory lesson into solving system of equations using elimination
and substitution. This lesson can be used independently or as groups. I think either way would be beneficial.
This lesson will be introduced after learning about linear functions and solving linear functions and different
characteristics. This lesson should take anywhere between 45-60 minutes to complete. The students learning
will be assessed based on participation. I value participation and engagement over a grade. I can also monitor
live and see how each individual student is going and if any students need help is they got stuck on a
particular slide of the lesson. I could extend it into posing them a real- life question that has 3 system of
equations that they must solve. This lesson can be used to inform/differentiate by informing me on who is
struggling, who needs a little bit more practice, and who gets it and who needs more rigor. I can use this
assignment to form groups for the next day or give out homework according to their level. I will conclude the
lesson by reviewing with them what they learned and asking them when you know to use the elimination or
substitution method. I can provide feedback to students immediately by facilitating the class and monitoring
the work online.

Reflective Practice:

I think that this activity will help them understand solving systems of equations using different
representatives and using different methods on a more conceptual level versus if I were just to tell them at
the board through a lecture. However, I feel as though this lesson could have used more student autonomy
within the instruction. I think I could have given the students options on how they wanted to use their time to
learn this content. I could have posed a question instead and had the students work together in groups to
come up with a solution using any form of representation that makes since to them. They could have used
any other form of technology to help further their understanding that they are familiar with. A lot of students
prefer Desmos, or Geogebra, Word document, Excel, a simple paper manipulative.
