Conflicts Over Privacy in the Workplace:

There is tension between companies and their employees over privacy in the workplace. Some
companies track emplayees via company-issued GPS-enabled smartphones and monitor
employees behavior through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Currently,
there are no laws preventing companies from monitoring and tracking employees. Companies
believe not monitoring these platforms leaves them vulnerable to misconduct. For instance, the
Internet increased the number of distractions in the workplace, and same employees may
spend up to 30 percent of their time at work using social media sites for non-work purposes.
On the other hand, employees argue they have a right to their privacy. They see tracking as a
clear sign that their employers do not trust them. Another major argument is that employers
with access to employee social media sites or smartphones might be able to monitor employee
activity outside the workplace. Where is the line drawn on ensuring employees are working
appropriately versus their rights to privacy?
1. Companies shouild have the right to track employees through company smartphones and
monitor their personal Facebook and Twitter accounts
2. Employees should be able to maintain their personal privacy and not be tracked through
their company smartphones or their Facebook and Twitter accounts

Answer:
The Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 is a federal
law that gives employers the right to monitor their employees. Companies have full right to
track their employees but in the right manner. Their is a fine line between constructive and
destructive manner or attitude. The company should show positive and constructive attitude
towards this activity because if used unwisely then it can violate personal privacy which indeed
is the main concern of the employees.
This activity can be used for enhancing the performance which will ultimately lead to increased
productivity and it will benefit the company. It is an era of severe competition, small things even
matter. Employee tracking will allow the management to understand their employees
behaviour successfully and in anticipating the role of their employees, they will be able to find
out how that employee can participate his role in achieving the future goals which will
ultimately lead them to replace that employee in perfect situations according to the future
strategies being set by the company.
It will also allow them to evaluate the performances of their employees and find out ways to
further increase their performances. This will allow them to enhance their training standards
which will ultimately produce more professional employees. Last but not the least this activity
will help them to keep an eye on their employees that either they are not involved in some
heinous activities that can have drastic effects on the company or on the society.
