ME33001 Homework 1 (Due in Feb 2 in Class)

This document contains the instructions for homework 1 assigned in a mechanics course. It includes 5 problems worth 20 marks each: 1) determining minimum diameters for welded cylindrical rods under stress limits, 2) finding maximum load and stress for a glued wood splice joint, 3) calculating diameter for a specified deflection in a loaded brass rod, 4) determining deflection at a point for a load supported by aluminum links, and 5) an unspecified fifth problem also worth 20 marks.

ME33001 Homework 1 (Due in Feb 2th in Class)

1. [20 marks] Two solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and loaded
as shown. Knowing that the average normal stress must not exceed 175 MPa in rod AB
and 150 MPa in rod BC, determine the smallest allowable values of d1 and d2.

2. [20 marks] Two wooden members of uniform rectangular cross section are joined by
the simple glued scarf splice shown. Knowing that the maximum allowable shearing
stress in the glued splice is 620 kPa, determine (a) the largest load P that can be safely
applied, (b) the corresponding tensile stress in the splice.

3. [20 marks] A single axial load of magnitude P = 58 kN is applied at end C of the brass
rod ABC. Knowing that E =105 GPa, determine the diameter d of portion BC for which
the deflection of point C will be 3 mm.
4. [20 marks] Each of the links AB and CD is made of aluminum (E =75 GPa) and has a
cross-sectional area of 258 mm2. Knowing that they support the rigid member BC,
determine the deflection of point E.

5. [20 marks]
