SHC Lab

The document describes a lab experiment to determine the specific heat capacity of a metal using the method of mixtures. Key details include: 1) Masses of the metal, empty cup, and water/cup mixture were measured, and initial and final temperatures of the metal and water were recorded. 2) Heat energy gained by the liquid was assumed to equal heat energy lost by the metal. This assumption was used to calculate the specific heat capacity of the metal. 3) Possible sources of error include heat loss to the surroundings and temperature not being uniform throughout the mixture. Stirring helped promote uniform temperature.

TITLE: The Specific Heat Capacity.

LAB NUMBER:  10

DATE:  March 2, 2021

AIM: To find the specific heat capacity of a metal using the method of mixtures.

APPARATUS: Metal, Styrofoam cup, water, stirrer, thermometer, electronic balance, beaker, tripod stand,
gauze, Bunsen burner, string

METHOD:
1. Use the balance to find the mass, ms, of solid; record the value.
2. Tie string to the metal and place the metal in a beaker of water and allow the water to boil for at least 5
minutes.
3. Find mass, ml of liquid placed in cup by finding mass of empty cup and then mass of cup and liquid.
4. Record the initial temperature, Ti of the liquid in cup
5. Record the temperature of the boiling water. This is also the initial temperature, Tim , of the metal.
6. Transfer the metal as quickly as possible from beaker to cup with liquid and stir
7. Record the highest temperature, Tf of the liquid obtained after the metal was placed in the cup.

RESULTS
46.7
a. Mass of solid: _______________g 0.0467
= ________kg
8.08
b. Mass of empty cup: _______________g  0.0808
= ________kg
c. Mass of water and cup:138.49(to 2dp) = __________kg
_____________g 0.13849
d. Initial Temperature of cold water 28°C
85
e. Initial Temperature of metal, Tim: _________________°C
38
f. Highest (final) temperature of liquid, Tf: ______________°C

CALCULATIONS: Show all calculations

Given the assumption: Heat energy gained by liquid = heat energy lost by metal,
 Find the Specific Heat Capacity of the metal

DATA ANALYSIS:
1. Why is the assumption used above not strictly true?
2. After a while the temperature falls from its maximum value. Why is this?

PRECAUTIONS
To ensure the best results the following precautions were taken: The electronic Balance must be zeroed before
List 2 to 3  precautions taken to ensure best results. being used.
Here are a few guiding :
 Why must the transfer of metal to cup be done quickly? The thermometer should touch the bottom of
 Why is Styrofoam cup a good choice as a container? the cup
 Why was the mixture stirred?

CONCLUSION
247.4
The specific heat capacity of the metal is ________J/kgK
