What is Frame Running?
The activity of Frame Running, formerly known as RaceRunning, is unique in what it
can enable some disabled people to achieve and that is to RUN! In many cases this
means people who cannot walk independently or even at all - moving at speed,
with their own feet and by their own volition!

Sounds incredible! And it is - it’s really something to witness. You cannot imagine
what this sport means to those who participate. People with conditions that
have meant years of interrupted or ‘broken’ walking patterns who often have
to negotiate unsympathetic environments - now experiencing the wind at
their backs, new rythmns in movement, different stimuli and reactions in their
bodies... speed!

The Running Frame or ‘Frame Runner’, simply described - is a three-

wheeled frame with a saddle, body support and most notably, no pedals.
The rider finds a running/propulsion style, suitable for them and the result
is a sensation of speed, exhilaration and freedom!

Key benefits to Frame Running:

• Contributes to normal bone development through partial

weight bearing. “We started a Frame Running
• For many this is the only ‘Cardio’ exercise possible.
• Psychosocial benefits, peer interaction, independent
club. Everyone prefers activity
movement and a fun form of physiotherapy. to physio, it is great fun with
• Ability to experience the sensation of running, spatial
awareness, coordination and endorphin release. lots of benefits!”

Running Frame Anatomy

1
The body support helps to distribute the user’s body
weight. This enables the user to have greater freedom
to move their legs. They vary in shape and size and
1 may be used with an additional belt.

3 2
Ideally, the saddle only provides minimal weight
bearing whilst running, but is also present whilst the
user is resting. Saddles come in many shapes and
4 5 sizes, often the positioning, height and angle are key
to ensuring the user is comfortable.

3
The Drop-link system enables the seat and seat post
to be folded down to allow for easier transfer into the
frame.

This feature, together with the space between the

rear wheels, makes it easier to access the frame from
a wheelchair.

4 5
Hand brakes prevent the Running Frame from rolling
whilst users transfer on and off the frame. The Sprung steering on the Running Frame enables
the user to control and maintain their direction.
The front brake situated on the handle bars controls The position on the forks is adjustable and springs

can be optimised for use according to the user’s environment
needs and fine motor skills.

Clinical Benefits

Annecdotal evidence for improved physiological and mental wellbeing

are well documented among the Frame Running community. If you
talk to anyone who uses a Running Frame regularly they will often
be smiling and eager to share their stories of the transformative
nature of the activity. However, if this isn’t enough to convince you,
what about hard evidence? Internationally, studies are underway
covering a variety of topics around the use of a running frame.
These include studies relating to respiratory improvement, bone
density and cardiovascular health. More information can be
found at racerunning.org

Benefits in child development

Several studies have been done, and many more are

underway, exploring the associated physiological benefits
of Frame Running. Particularly in children’s physical
development where there is an existing mobility
impairment making walking and standing a challenge.
Studies have already revealed significant improvement
to bone density in children with Cerebral Palsy only
after a short period of using a Frame Runner.

Early-Intervention
The Petra Micro Frame is the smallest Running Frame we offer, suitable
for children from approximately 14 months.

Because of its reduced rolling resistance, the Micro is a great introduction

to walking and weight-bearing and helps infants overcome initial obstacles

A Sport with Momentum

It’s the sport of Frame Running. It’s unique in

what it lets some disabled people achieve and
that is to RUN! In many cases this means people
who cannot walk independently or even at all
- moving at speed, with their own feet and by
their own volition!
In competitive Frame Running, athletes run on a track in distances ranging
from 40 to 5,000 meters against other runners. Like with many other adaptive
sports, competitors are classified based on their disability which allows
athletes with similar physical challenges to compete on an even playing field.
To learn more about classifications in Frame Running, visit the Cerebral Palsy
Sport or CPISRA websites.

There are Frame Running clubs popping up all over the UK. Joining a club
gives a runner the opportunity to train with experienced coaches, make
friends and have fun. All Frame Running clubs are inclusive so anyone
is welcome, it’s a great way to enjoy the social and physical benefits of
Frame Running in a supportive group environment. If you are struggling
to find a club locally and would like to find out more information about
starting your own, Quest has resources available to help you.

12
The next level, competitions and classification
Frame Running is a growing sport and, as it has developed, a competition
structure has evolved through British Athletics. National competitions are often
open to new entrants without a classification.

Your coach will be able to advise on the appropriate classes and distances. In
order to compete at an international level, runners must first be classified, this is
to ensure that races are fair. You can find out more about the classification process
on the CPISRA website.

Like other para-athletics sports, entrants are categorised by age, distance and
classification (even if this is estimated). Events are held nationwide and are a great
way for athletes to meet up and share experiences.

If you want to know more about competition opportunities near you, head over to
either the CP Sport, or RaceRunning Scotland websites.
