Communication Is Intention & Unintention

Communication can be both intentional and unintentional. Intentional communication aims to convey a specific message through verbal methods like dialogue, interviews, and written correspondence. Unintentional communication is non-verbal and conveys messages through body language and paralinguistic features like eye contact, posture, tone of voice, and appearance without conscious effort by the sender. Both forms of communication are important to understand in interactions.

According to (Keith Davis)

“Communication is the process of passing information and understanding

from one person to another .”

According to (John Adair )

“Communication is essentially the ability of one person to make contact

with another and make himself or herself understood”

According to (Oxford English Dictionary)

“Communication is the importing or exchanging of information by speaking

,writing or using some medium”

Generally ,Communication is the process which transmits and

disseminates important ideas ,thought ,feeling and plans ,it is a learned skills
.Communication skills are generally understood to be an art or techniques of
persuasion through the use of oral ,written (verbal) and non verbal features .

However ,while the most people are born with physical ability to talk ,not all
can communicate well unless they make special efforts to develop and
refines the skills further .Communication broadly included both verbal and
non-verbal .It also include lip reading ,finger spelling ,sign language and
body language.

It transfers thought ,information ,emotion and ideas through gestures ,voice

,symbols ,signs and expressions from one person to another .In fulfilling
communication process three things are important which are sender ,receiver
and channel (medium).
Communication is both intentional and unintentional. Intentional
communication according to Peter and Carolyn (2002) It is also called
conscious communication, which refers to the display of communication
signs or signaling behavior in which the sender is already aware of the effect
such as display will have on his target that is listener .It means that one
person is sending massage to another person in purposefully ways .In this
form we intend to send our massages to receivers .And unintentional
communications according to Melisa is always non-verbal communication
,it often comes in forms that are demonstrated unconsciously (Examples
physical pasture ,tone of voices and behavior .It was not mean for the
individual who received it since it is unconsciously .

The following explain how communication is both intentional and

unintentional.

It is intentional due to the following ways.

Dialogue, is type of verbal communication ,it termed as the type of

oral communication .It is the exchange of spoken words between two or
more characters in a book play or other written work and even face to face
.In the dialogue people are totally intending on what to say ,in other words in
that conversation people intended on conveying the massage they had
Therefore this shows how the communication is intentional through
conversation since focusing on convey the massage one has .See the
following example of dialogue between system and user

System: How may I help you?

User: I have a question

System: OK, What is your question?

User :I would like to know my account balance

System: I can help you with that .What is your account

number?

User:1554765439

System :Your balance is 70000000/=

We see that User started the communication with the system for the
intention of asking the balance , and the system respond for the intention of
giving the information to the user concerns his balance .Therefore
communication can be intentional.

Interview, is a structured conversation where some participant asks

the questions and the other provide the answers. Interview is a structured
conversation between interviewer and interviewee .The Interviewer asks the
questions where by interviewee responds .It is the type of oral
communication as well as verbal communication ;In this type we see the
communication is intentional ,since the interview always intends to ask the
specific question in order to know something ,also the interviewee responds
with the intention o giving answers .See the following example

Interviewer : Why should we hire you?

Interviewee :I have 5 years experiences working in the financial

Industry and my proved records of saving money ,I could Make a

big difference in your company I am confident and I would be a great
addition to your team.
We see that ,the interview sends massage for the intention of knowing the
capacity of his employee and interviewee responds for the intention of being
employed in that company.

Debate, is the process that involves formal discussion on particular

topic .It occurs in public meeting ,academy, different institutions and
legislative assembly ,often with moderators and audience .People are
debating for the intention of giving out arguments on a particular topics
.There are opposers and supporters for example in the debate between
Muslims and Christians about the “TRUE RELIGION” Hence the
communication done between them with the intentional of defending and
converting one another ,therefore communication is intentional.

In addition ,Through written communication :It is the sharing and

exchanging of written symbols between individual and group .It is also the
presentation or ideas in a coherent manner in written form .This can take
place via letters ,faxes, e-mails, reports and advertisement .In which the
senders has the intentional of writing a certain massage and send it to
receiver .For example the famous letter written by Mahtma Gandhi to Adolf
Hitler to please him not to progress with war in 1930’s .Sender intended to
send the message .Also another example is when someone writing an official
letter (Application letter) he /she intend to convey the message to receiver
(employer) to give him or her jobs.

On other hand communication can be unintentional, in the following ways:

Posture, It is the form of non-verbal communication which is in the

form of body language .It refers to the way we sit, stand and carry
ourselves .It communicates the way we visualize the world around us .For
instance ,what do you think of a person who keeps his/her head down while
walking .Those people did not intend to give us any message but through
posture we can understand and get the message about someone .Some
others appear to be the lost in deep thought and contemplation .So we get the
message if they are either mocked at or ignored.

Eye contact, Eyes are windows to the soul, they truthfully convey the
emotions and feelings one goes through .In facts ,it is believed that you can
tell lies with words but your eyes will give away the truth. So the eye
contacts give the message which you did not intend to give. It can be turned
as unintentional communication. Therefore looking into a person’s eyes is
the best way to understand his/her attitude or reaction to all that you speak

Personal appearance(dressing code), A person’s external appearance

is important aspect to judge his/her, who is he/she without being told ,you
can know his identity ,his professional and even his status .Fore example, if
you choose to wear a rumpled dress on the day you are being interviewed ,it
is sure to spoil your chance of landing into a job. Since the rumpled dress
indicate that you are not well organized at all as well as you must really in
unorganized with your work too ,perhaps you might not have the intentional
of telling the interviewers that you are not well organized with your work
but they will get that message .

Paralinguistic, This is the science of using language .includes

pauses ,rate, volume, and pitch. Through paralinguistic features the listener
can get the massages which you did not intend to give them . Rate refers to
the number of word we use per minute . When you speak too fast is related
to lack of comfort and hence you give the listeners message you did not
intend to give, Pauses are essential part of all human interactions with others
.when speaker do not pause we get the information and message that he /she
is really worried about not being able to locate an idea once they have
paused. Volume, when a speaker’s volume is too low we get the message
that he/she is not confident. Pitch is the quality of a sound by the rate of
vibrations producing it, the degree of highness or lowness of a tone, when
someone asks you to make less noise we simply lower something so what do
we lower? Is it pitch or volume? It is volume you can not increase or
decrease the pitch. Also plays a great role in conveying your message to the
others even if you did not intend to do so. For example we find the speech of
a person quite boring because he/she does not use the variety of pitch
patterns as per the requirement of the situation.

Conclusion to avoid unintentional communication we should do the

following, Make better preparation before you enter in the debate,

presentation, interview, also you must think twice and even thrice before

you say something , so that you can avoid blaming yourself like, why I have

said this? No I did it without my intention to do so.in other words as

explained by caral carysforth in his book Communication for work (unit 2

page21), think first communicate later also polish your punctuation .
