First of, Project management involves all activities that includes scheduling, constructive planning, and

controlling projects. For it to become successful, one should be attentive, disciplined, and industrious for it
to be successful. As said in the first part of the video, being construction project manager is not an easy
job. An engineer alone can’t be properly named or be a construction project manager without its team,
contractors, clients, and etc. Just because you are the construction project manager doesn’t mean that
you hold the power to everything. You got to follow what the clients and sponsors want to create and you
as a construction project manager make it happen with your respective teams and colleagues. You will
encounter a a lot of problems such as disagreements between clients and colleagues, cost constraint and
quality of materials, deadlines and etc. You got to lead your team and colleagues to become organized
and to properly execute their respectful jobs. So its already expected that the job isn’t easy and being a
construction project manager is one of the stressful job as an engineer. Nevertheless, this is the obstacles
that a construction project manager will have to face in each work and to become successful.

The path of Engineering is quite confusing and at the same time intriguing. Depending on what you want
and what your skills are qualified for, there are numerous options on what we can specialize on but as
they say “ you’re current situation is not your final destination” meaning we can expand our horizon and
experience. But there is one skill that every engineer should have regardless of what field they are in and
that are leadership and management skill. As I said a while ago, a construction project manager isn’t
alone in projects. You got your colleague such as architects, various engineers, designers, and laborers.
You also got your clients, the government, and your sponsors. For you and your team to execute their job
flawlessly, you got to lead them hence the leadership and management skill. A construction project
manager should know how to manage his team work properly. They should know how to work in teams
for short span of time, how to give out the task to people depending on their skills, which project
management methodology to apply depending upon the nature of the project, benchmark for the
particular project you are working on to have the basic knowledge of what already is out there available in
the market. Leadership and management skill should come with how well you communicate with others.
As a construction project manager, they should know when to rational and truthful to his/her clients and
team. They will be bound to have some misunderstanding between the team and it is the project
manager’s job to properly explain the plans for the project .Again as a construction project manager, you
hold only a mediocre power between your team and your clients but just because of that, it doesn’t mean
that you are to be held only to what your client want to create. A construction project manager should be
creative and rational when facing a lot of stress and on what the client wants. They should not be afraid to
voice out their opinions. They should know how to create a resource plan when in they require you to
understand and identify the work to be done and the human skills required to complete it.
The Technical skills that are shown for a competent CPM are all dependent on one another. If one fails to
have at least one skill, the other skills will not be able to extend their true intent as a skill. This skills as a
Construction project manager and along the skills of your team makes the project go smoothly and
flawlessly. These skills can be learned in college with books and the internet. But what matters is the
experience. Just as the saying goes “Skills and Techniques that you learned is useless when you haven’t
experienced it”. We can deliberately push ourselves to learn and learn more about these skills, but we
shouldn’t expect that the outcome would always be 100%. If it did then that is great but if it failed that is
also great because now that we failed, we can now narrow down our mistakes and do it again but this
time with the more knowledge and experience. And there will always be your team to help you. Speaking
of teams, having a good team is one of the key ingredients in having a successful project. Sometimes,
project managers do not have the freedom of choosing team members. Members may be assigned to the
project team. You can except that you will be strangers to one another. Some will prefer to be alone for
work, some are having their first time having a job like this, some will be confused. A good team will not
develop overnight. As a Construction project manager, the reason why you got to have a great leadership
skill is because you are responsible for creating a good team. For me, for a good team to be formed, the
leader should know the skills of his/her team and then distribute them to their qualified job. Appointing the
team early get the most out of their ownership to the project, and maximizes what they can contribute
towards the product development. Not just that, a leader should know when to raise his/her voice to
control the morale of the team. As such, this would lead to the project to go smoothly. Again, the
construction project manager is a lot harder than it seems. They got to manage their team, their budget,
their safety, their deadline, the quality of materials, the manpower needed to execute the project, the
planning for the project and etc. They are making this a daily habit for themselves not only because it is
their job but also to improve everyday for more successful outcome of a project

It was mentioned in the video that there are four career types: Linear, Steady-expert, Spiral and
Transitory. The explanation was very simple and very informative. We’ll never know how our career will
take off in the future. It all depends on our experience and skill that will shape our career to how we want
it. I do not expect that when I graduate, I will immediately land a job as an engineer. No, there will be the
board exam, there is competition and there is someone who has higher credentials than me. For me, I
just hope that I could achieve the linear career type. But then again, it depends on whether I can do it or
not. And for me to achieve such a high position such as construction project manager, I would need to
acquire CPD’s which is career progress development. Again, I do not expect this to progress overnight.
Just as the video said, it could be roughly take years to achieve such position and that is because you
accumulate experience and refining your skills throughout the time. What I really appreciate in the
webinar is that the speaker tells the benefits he receives and how these benefits came from experience
and hard work. As such, the webinar made more knowledgeable on how a successful construction project
manager works and the skills needed to be one.
