Altogether: Heavenly Father, in your love you have called us to know you, led us to trust you,
and bound our life with yours. Surround this child with your love, protect it from evil. Fill it with
the Holy Spirit and receive it into the family of your church that it may walk with us in the way of
Christ, and grow in the knowledge of your love.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
(For Catholic students only)

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body…. And we were all given to drink
of one Spirit.. 1 Corinthians 12:13

When the risen Lord Jesus sent His disciples to make disciples of all nations, He gave them the
authority to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Baptism was
practised by the early Church to initiate believers into the Christian community.

The Great Commissioning

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they say saw him, they worshipped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and

said to them. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have
commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
-Mt.28:16-20

The Church teaches us the importance of Baptism, that is, to realize our being part of the
mystical Body of Christ- the Church.

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life. Through Baptism, we are freed from sin
and reborn as sons and daughters of God.

1. New life in union with Christ or communion with Jesus Christ.

Baptism’s first effect to unite the baptized with Christ, their Risen Lord. How this union is
effected is biblically developed in two ways: through the symbol of water and God’s Spirit,
and secondly, by sharing in Christ’s “baptism” of his Paschal Mystery.
-CFC 1599

2. Incorporation into the Church or communion with the members of the Church.
Baptism’s second effect is to unite us with others as members of Christ’s Body, the Church
(cf.CCC 1267-70) “The body is one and has many members but all the members many
through they are, are one body, and so it is with Christ. It was in one spirit that all of us…
were baptized into one body. All of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit “(1 Cor
12:12f). This means that our personal relationship with Christ is never any “private affair” we
have created by ourselves, but always a loving friendship that originates, develop and
grows in union with fellow-members of Christ’s Body, the Church.
-CFC 1609
Baptism gives a share in the common priesthood of all believers.
-CCC 1268
3. Sharing of the Divine Life or communion with the mission of the Church through
the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Baptism is the effective symbol of our sharing in the divine life.

-CFC 1605
Baptism not only purifies from all sins, but also makes the neophyte “ a new creature”, an
adopted son of God, who has become a “partaker of the divine nature,” member of Christ
and coheir with him, and a temple of the Holy Spirit.
-CCC 1265
In the Latin Church this triple infusion is accompanied by the minister’s words: “N., I baptize
you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

2
In the story of Creation, the Great Flood, and the Great Flood, and the Exodus event, water
carries different meanings. Water can be a friend or an enemy. It can be a gentle flowing
stream providing water for cleaning and bathing; it can sustain life, quench our thirst, and help
plants grow. On the other hand, it can be violent and cause destruction, terror, and death.
Biblical writers see water with supernatural significance, and they associate it with either the
presence of God or frightening image of God’s determination to judge sins and wipe out evil.
From the Book of Genesis to the book of Revelation, we see God’s personal involvement in
the world through water and His deep desire to give us abundant life and everlasting joy. In the
New Testament, one sign that Jesus is God is that He has the same power over water that
God used throughout the Old Testament. However, Jesus never used water to punish sinners.
Instead, He walked on the waves to bring comfort to His disciples and calmed the storm to
build their faith, He even offered living water to the Samaritan woman He met at the well that
symbolized eternal life and fulfilment found only in Him.

Baptism means “to dip” or “to plunge into water.” The examples of baptism recorded in the
Bible happen in the open air at river although there is no biblical instruction that river is the
only place for baptism. Later, the Church practised baptism indoors, with a small amount of
water. Today, baptism takes place in the baptistery of the Church practiced baptism indoors,
with a smaller amount of water. Today, baptism takes place in the Church. Simultaneous with
water being poured on the forehead of the recipient of the Sacrament, the minister of the
Sacrament says, I baptized you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit.” After this, the baptized is sealed with a cross on the forehead using the chrism.
Presumably the Lord is pleased that, regardless of location, people fulfil the purpose of the
baptism by identifying themselves with the crucified and risen Christ and incorporating
themselves into the Church. Therefore, the key elements in baptism in the New Testament are
(1) that people repent (change their hearts and lives); (2) that they are baptized with water in
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Spirit; (3) that they realized that the Holy
Spirit is present in their lives making them children of God by grace through faith in Christ; and
(4) that they are added to the fellowship of those who believe in and belong to God through
Christ. These elements are probably rooted in early Christian reflection on Ezekiel 36: 25-
2,where cleansing with water is associated with cleansing with water is associated with
cleansing of the hearts.

Jesus allowed John to baptized Hi in the Jordan River. He clearly commanded His followers to
baptized new believers. Thus, we have to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. The apostles
took this instructions by heart and began to fulfil this commission at Pentecost.
