Based on the episode of IWitness entitled, "Mga Pahina ng Kasaysayan" dokumentaryo ni

Sandra Aguinaldo, why is it relevant that we need to include the study of Readings in Philippine
History in our curriculum? Do you think it has an impact on our daily lives today? Explain your
answer. (200 words minimum)
The study of readings in the philippine history should be include in today's curriculum because
during this time , where technology is vast. Many country are influencing us that lead the Filipino youth
to completely forgot about the rich history of ours. Studying the Philippines history not only gives us
knowledge about the past but also helps to preserve those knowledge left by our ancestor. The study of
reading in Philippine history provides us proof about how historic the Filipino is, based on the old book
written in baybayin the first way of Filipino writings, the old maps indicating the territory of Philippine
since the colonial period, the novel created by our national heroes and many other writing left by the
invaders like Spaniards. It is important to study this history because it gave us a lot of knowledge that are
not spoken yet on the internet . For example of this are the old maps indicating that the Scarborough shore
are in the Philippines territory since the old times. It proves that we are right and as an evidence that we
could use in the arbitrary tribunal against China's claim in the isle. Maybe without this proof from history
would lead us to not argue in the claim. This knowledge lies on the old book located at UST's library kept
for a long time. Books pages get old and destroyed by time but through studying and understanding its
content might prolong its life through exchange of knowledge from generations to generations. We could
pass it through the means of learning and words. Through this way exchange is more convenient rather
than expending 50 thousand per book for restoration. Studying the reading of the Philippine history helps
us to know about the past of the old Filipinos and how amazing they are. Imagine that they created a book
that are fully handwritten and with thick pages and are written on diffrent writing such as In baybayin,
Spanish, mandarin, and English . They also created a book about medicines and medicinal plants which
are almost complete and are fully hand drawn. And the most amazing part are the grades of our national
hero Jose Rizal which are being preserved indicating how proficient he is in academics. He excelled even
though the sources of knowledge during that time is limited only. It has an impact today in our daily lifes
because putting those knowledge in our mind and integrating it to our daily lifes teaches us a lesson.
There are many knowledge that are not yet have been written on the internet that is available on the old
books on the shelves. Discovering this knowledge and taking time to study it would might lead to uncover
and discover new things in the field of history, medicines, and many more. It is so inspiring that during
old times Filipinos is already smart , creative, and flexible for they manage to create books with their own
hands without the use of any technology. Imagine now a days how far we have got. We have many tools,
we have the internet, we have anything accessible with our bare hands. Imagine what our ancestors
created without tools together for what we have now. We can discover more and create more like them.
We can make a new possibilities and impossible things. Without them there are no us today.

1. Engage: Give a logical explanation to the famous quotation used by Confucius, "Study the
past if you would define the future."
If one wants to define the future, they must study the past. This quote by Confucius
“Study the past if you would define the future”, it is literal and straightforward. Without the past,
there is no future. We must study how mankind developed into what it is now today. Innovators
who want to change the world need to have the basic knowledge of what they are tweaking or
upgrading. They must know how it works and operates, and if it would really be better if the
changes are made. People who would want to define the future must study the past. It is important
because without past we don’t have future.

2. Explore: Fill the graphic organizer below about the concept of studying History. 1. What is
history? 2. Why is it importance to study History? 3. What are primary sources? 4. What
are secondary sources? Write your answers under the "long answer text" section.
History is looking at others perspective, point of view, understanding what they thought
was okay and not okay. Evidence is cruel in history. Without evidence historians would not have
known what happened. The most important object to historians and their field of study are facts.
Facts are the skeletal structure to history, and without them, there would be nothing to build
history on.
History is one of the most respected and most valuable academic subjects that students
learn. The importance of history is very important because history is full of stories. History
remembers brilliant people and their heroic acts that have changed the shape of nations. You get a
huge amount of motivation from learning about the inspirational events that make up where we
are today. Through history, we can learn how past societies, systems, ideologies, governments,
cultures and technologies were built, how they operated, and how they have changed. The rich
history of the world helps us to paint a detailed picture of where we stand today. Developing your
knowledge of history means developing your knowledge of all these different aspects of life.
Primary sources provide a first-hand account of an event or time period and are
considered to be authoritative. They represent original thinking, reports on discoveries or events,
or they can share new information. Often these sources are created at the time the events occurred
but they can also include sources that are created later. They are usually the first formal
appearance of original research. Example of primary sources are diaries, correspondence, ships'
logs, original documents , birth certificates, trial transcripts, biographies, autobiographies,
manuscripts
Secondary sources offer an analysis, interpretation or a restatement of primary sources
and are considered to be persuasive. They often involve generalization, synthesis, interpretation,
commentary or evaluation in an attempt to convince the reader of the creator's argument. They
often attempt to describe or explain primary sources. Examples of secondary sources include,
journal articles that comment on or analyze research, textbooks, dictionaries and encyclopedias,
books that interpret, analyze, political commentary, biographies, dissertations, newspaper
editorial, criticism of literature, art works or music.

3. Elaborate: Produce an example of a primary source and the corresponding secondary

source derived from it.
Examples of primary sources are novel, painting, letters and diaries written by a historical
figure, essay by a philosopher, photographs of a historical event, government documents about a
new policy, music recordings, results of an opinion poll and empirical study , and the example of
corresponding secondary source derive from it are article analyzing the novel, exhibition catalog
explaining the painting, biography of the historical figure, textbook summarizing the
philosopher’s ideas, documentary about the historical event, newspaper article about the new
policy, academic book about the musical style, blog post interpreting the results of the poll,
literature review that cites the study.

2. Explore: How can you think and act like historians?

To think and act like a historians we must be able to learn to collect and evaluate
evidence objectively and relate the cause and effect of events within a time perspective.
Thinking historically requires the ability to describe, explain, analyze, and weigh a
complex series of factors within another culture and time. We can learn to think like
historians through traditional survey courses which use textbooks, discussions, and
writing assignments. To act historians we must require to read model monographs and to
examine collections of primary documents which give us the opportunity to analyze
evidence or reconstruct an event.

3. Elaborate: What is the main purpose of examining primary sources?

Primary sources help students relate in a personal way to events of the past and promote a
deeper understanding of history as a series of human events. Because primary sources are
incomplete document of history, each one represents a mystery that students can only explore
further by finding new pieces of evidence. The main purpose of examining primary sources is to
gives us the opportunity to analyze the evidence or reconstruct an event.

4. Evaluate: . As a history student, why is it important to read primary sources than

secondary sources? Support your answer.
As a history student, primary sources is important to read than secondary sources,
because primary sources provide us raw information and first-hand evidence. A primary source
gives you direct access to the subject of your research and it is better to read primary sources
because it is more credible evidence than secondary sources.
