Many
people face challenges in as far as the acquisition of foodstuffs like rice and flour is concerned. Port of
Spain ,the capital is where much of the action takes place.And Miguel street is carrying all the
characters. Miguel street becomes a theatre where all the action takes place.To the residents,the street
is not only a home but also a culture and a religion there fervently cling to.Some attempt to escape it in
vain.The collection can best be called a novel because it contains the same characters and themes and
setting.The narrator (writer) is assisted in describing the setting,plot and other characters by Hat.Hat
comes handy in explaining a mystery or weird behaviour by certain characters. The character of Hat
changes at a later stage when he marries Dolly(a woman who later flees him to live with another man
with all the "joolary" he spoils her with.)Seems Hat fails to understand that women deserve more other
than gifts as aptly pointed out by his companion Eddoes who declarers that women don't want "joolary"
from a man like Hat ,but they want something else.Eddos is insinuating that Hat is weak in bed and can
not satisfy a wife.The Matildah Calypso he quotes is a veiled attack on Hat's ineptitude to sexually satisfy
a woman.Apart from the sexual innuendo in the calypso,there's foreshadowing .There's a hint of what's
