A Global Village
The world is connected into a global economy by a number of factors and for a variety of
reasons. The term globalization is often used to discuss this connectivity. In a global
economy, countries integrate characteristics of other economies into their own and become
increasingly dependent on one another for economic growth. This report will discuss how
Education, Wealth/Poverty and Employment impact the world globally.
Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills,
values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include teaching, training, storytelling,
discussion and directed research.
Social (Positive): Education is often used by people to form their ‘social identity’, framing
their understanding of themselves and their relationships with other individuals. A positive,
affirming social identity is associated with a range of positive outcomes in life, such as
increased wellbeing, health, social trust and political engagement. Education also reveals
additional oppurtunities for one to communicate as within schools the students are combined
in the same environment which opens up oppurtunities to socialise. Education at any level
exposes students to different cultures and ideas. From elementary to high school,
socialization brings children and teens from different backgrounds together, and they can
learn from each other. In the first source we can see almost all countries around the world
have an 80 percent attendance rate of educational places however in East, West, South and
Central Africa there is an average of only 64 percent of inhabitants using educational places.
These two parts of the world have caused the world attendance rate of people using
educational resources to 85 percent however without these two parts the attendance rate
would be at 91 percent.
Technological (Negative): Education has a negative impact on the world technologically as
it causes huge expenditure, insufficient teaching methods, waste of time, misguidance due to
wrong information, major source of distraction, creates enough opportunities for cheating,
learners get disconnected from the real world, losing assignment of the students, difficult to
deal with the online courses, extinction of good handwriting, partial to the low income group
of people, EBooks replacing physical books. As we can see in the second source the image
shows throughout middle school to high school over 80 percent of students own a mobile
phone. This means these students are exposed to wrong information and can be distracted
easily due to the technology provided to them.
Poverty and wealth are often found side by side. They are two dimensions in our world that
are interrelated because they affect each other and influence both the willingness and capacity
of states to ensure a stable global system.
Environmenatal (Positive): Wealth has a positive impact on the environment as it provides
us with the funds to create renewable energy, also known as ‘clean energy’ which is energy
that is collected from renewable resources which are naturally replenished such as sunlight,
wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. It also enables us to provide smart home
technology which consists of using devices such as linking sensors and other appliances
connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) that can be remotely monitored and programmed in
order to be as energy efficient as possible and to respond to the needs of the users. As we can
see in the third source between 59-189 billion pounds were needed to ensure a healthy
environment that is equivalent to 105-338 billion dollars Australian. Without wealth these
funds would not have been generated to ensure a healthy environment.
Social (Negative): Poverty is a major cause of social tensions and threatens to divide a nation
because of the issue of inequalities, in particular income inequality. This happens when
wealth in a country is poorly distributed among its citizens. The feature of a rich or developed
country for example is the presence of a middle class, but recently we've seen even Western
countries gradually losing their middle class, hence the increasing number of riots and
clashes. In a society, poverty is a very dangerous factor that can destabilize and entire
country. In the fourth source we can see throughout the decades there has been and increase
in poverty reaching the peak between 1950 and 2000 where there was over 2 billion people
facing poverty globally. However in the recent decades the amount of poverty has decreased
and in 2015 it dropped to under 1 billion people facing poverty.
Employment is a relationship between two parties, usually based on a contract where work is
paid for, where one is the employer and the other is the employee. An employee contributes
labor and expertise to an endeavor of an employer and is usually hired to perform specific
duties which are packaged into a job.
Economic(Positive): Employment contributes to economic growth: Workers produce
valuable goods and services, and in turn receive a wage which they can spend on buying the
goods produced. High employment means a greater number of goods can be produced as
well. Before the industrial revolution, workers relied only on what they could produce
individually. This resulted in a limited number of products for sale, which generally included
meat, grains and textiles. As production and employment with a business grows, so too does
the variety of goods and services offered. The availability of electronics, various specialty
foods, clothing and other retail items is due entirely to the expansion of employment
opportunities and an able workforce willing to produce these items. As seen in the fifth
source there has been an increase in jobs by 4 million since 2000. With this increase the
world economy has increased and is more powerful than ever before.
Socially(Negative):The personal and social costs of unemployment include severe financial
hardship and poverty, debt, homelessness and housing stress, family tensions and breakdown,
boredom, alienation, shame and stigma, increased social isolation, crime, erosion of
confidence and self-esteem, the atrophying of work skills and ill-health. In addition,
unemployment falls disproportionately on already disadvantaged groups in society, for
example, lower income earners, recently arrived migrants and indigenous Australians. As we
can see in the sixth source during 2020 unemployment has been a huge problem with the
peak being in between March and April reaching 6,867 people losing their jobs. This has
caused people to lose their homes and caused people to become anti-social which causes
people to be isolated from eachother.
In conclusion, the world is globally connected by many factors and is created into a global
village. Above the report states three factors providing positive and negative impacts on the
world. Education, Wealth/Poveerty and Employment are arguablly some of the most
important factors which create the world into a global village.
