METHOD STATEMENT FOR TRENCHING AND BACKFILLING

1.0 PURPOSE

1.1 Ensure that trenching and backfilling is carried out in proper condition as per Method
Statement and National Standard.

2.0 SCOPE

2.1 This procedure shall cover designated location for trenching and backfilling for ---- Project.

3.1 RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1 Engineer-in-Charge is responsible for ensuring the installation works is carried out as
per Method Statement and in a safe manner.
3.2 Engineer-in-Charge ensure the installation as per approved shop drawing, specifications
and recommendations form consultant / main contractor.
3.3 Engineer-in-Charge is responsible for ensure thar materials are as per approved material
submittal.
3.4 Engineer-in-Charge is responsible to check that trenching, installation of pipe and
backfilling is carried out according to the technical and engineering requirements.
3.5 Engineer-in-Charge is responsible to carry out inspections on completed works.

5.9 Safety requirements tools such as safety shoes, safety helmet, safety glasses, safe
vests and safety gloves to ensure maximum ability of safe work.

6.0 MACHINERY USED

7.0 MATERIAL USED

7.1 Dune sand.


7.2 Approved pipes, materials.

8.0 PROCEDURES

8.1 Permit to work shall be raised for the trenching clearly mentioning the location of
work, size of excavation and levels.
8.2 Trenching areas shall be surveyed and marked to the lines and levels as shown on
drawings
8.3 The areas of excavation will be cordoned off using safety barricading to stop
trespassers.
8.4 The contractor shall take the necessary precautions to prevent damage to the road or
ground surface due to a slip or breaking away from the side walls of the trench
including the pedestrian safety as well.
8.5 Excavate the area by using only hand tools as per the markings and levels with the
proper protection of sides.
8.6 If excavation depth exceeds 1.2m proper shoring and shuttering should provide as per
safety norms or the excavation shall be stepped, wide enough to get stable slope on
sides of wall from soil sliding.
8.7 Backfilling of excavation areas shall be started as soon as practicable after the
permanent works have been tested and approved by the consultant.
8.8 Refilling of trenches over pipes shall be done by hand to a depth of 300mm above the
crown of pipe with dune sand.
8.9 Refill the leftover portion with suitable backfilling material (soil) in 300mm per layer
which shall be fully compacted by mechanical temper or roller.

9.0 MAIN CONTRACTOR – Engineer / M & E Supervisor

9.1 To liaise with contractor for the above installation.


9.2 To ensure sub-contractors follow the safety requirements on site.
9.3 To arrange for inspection with sub contractor.

10.0 SANYO ENGINEERING – Project Engineer / Supervisor

10.1 Site co-ordination.


10.2 To follow approved shop drawings.
10.3 To carry out toolbox briefing on the safety requirements before commencement of
installation works.
10.4 To complete the inspection checklist and follow the inspection and test plans detailed
in this procedure.
10.5 To establish installation of pump meets the specification requirements and Consultant
satisfaction.
10.6 To ensure sub-contractors follow the safety requirements on site.

11.0 SUB-CONTRACTOR WORKERS

11.1 To follow all safety requirements.


11.2 To follow the approved drawings and supervisor’s instructions
11.3 To apply for working at height procedure.
11.4 To ensure safe access and working area is clear of obstruction and debris.
11.5 To maintain proper housekeeping at all times.

12.0 SAFETY ASPECTS

12.1 Ladder used on site must be inspected and certified safe by the CPW Safety Supervisor
before use.

12.2 Ladder when used against wall shall not form an angle greater than 30 degree from
vertical.
12.3 Ladder when in use must be fully extended with the safety catch engaged and never
stand on the top step of a ladder.
12.4 All scaffoldings to be use on site must be inspected by CPW safety supervisor.
12.5 shall be worn safety glass, ear plug, hand gloves when performing like drilling work or
other works using electric tools.
12.6 All electrical cables shall not be laid across floor or submerge in ponds of water.
12.7 Workers are to be trained for scaffolding used.

13.0 HOUSEKEEPING

13.1 Good housekeeping shall be maintained at site all time.


13.2 All places of work shall be free from obstruction and any tripping hazards.
13.3 Waste materials shall be collected and disposed off at the end of every working day.

14.0 INSPECTION

14.1 After completion of installation, will be inspected with witness of the Engineer.
14.2 Attached inspection check list for above installation.
