Problem 6

A refrigeration system using R-22 has an evaporating temperature of -8°C and condensing temperature of 42°C, with a refrigerating capacity of 80kW. The document asks to (a) calculate the refrigerant volume flow into the compressor, (b) determine the compressor power required, and (c) find the vapor fraction at the evaporator inlet in both mass and volume fractions. It also asks to compare the COP of Carnot and Rankine refrigeration cycles using ammonia with a 30°C condensing and -20°C evaporating temperature.

P3.1.

A refrigeration system using refrigerant 22 is to have a refrigerating capacity of 80kW. The cycle is a
single stage vapor compression cycle(Rankine cycle) in which the evaporating temperature is -8oC and
the condensing temperature 42oC.

a) Determine the volume flow of refrigerant measured in cubic meters per second at the inlet to
the compressor.
b) Calculate the power required by the compressor.
c) At the entrance to the evaporator, what is the fraction of vapor in the mixture expressed both
on a mass basis and a volume basis?

P3.2.

Compare the COP of Carnot cycle and single stage vapor compression cycle (Rankine cycle). In both
cases use ammonia as the refrigerant, a condensing temperature of 30 oC, and an evaporating
temperature of -20 oC.
