The diagram, Figure 1, illustrates relative search interest % in boots and sandals using the Google
search engine during a one-thousand-day period. The information is for the UK only. The numbers
on the vertical axis represent search interest relative to the highest point on the chart for the UK
during this time period. A value of 100% is the peak interest in boots or sandals, in the UK, during
this time period.
Figure 1
(a) Describe the pattern of search interest in boots and sandals that is illustrated in Figure

Make four different comments.

(b) What useful information about search interest in boots and sandals, in the UK, during
this time period, is not included in Figure 1?

Make two different comments.

1 Figure 2 provides information about house prices compared to income of borrower for
first time buyers.

Figure 3 provides information about home ownership and rental for young adults, aged
from 20 years to 34 years, in the UK.

3 Rhodri is a web analyst working for Wikipedia. He has been told that articles on
Wikipedia that do not trend have an approximately constant rate of page views, with
individual page views occurring randomly and independently.

During 2016, the Wikipedia article entitled ‘Poisson distribution’ had a mean of 2.80
page views per minute (correct to 3 significant figures).

Rhodri produces a bar chart showing page views per day for the ‘Poisson distribution’
Wikipedia article in 2016. An extract from his bar chart is shown in Figure 5.

Figure 5

(a) Describe the variation shown in Figure 5.

Give a possible reason for this variation in context.

(2)
A second extract from Rhodri’s bar chart is shown in Figure 6.

Figure 6

(b) Describe the variation in the height of the highest bars for part of the year.

Give a possible reason for this variation in context.

Question 4 continued

A third extract from Rhodri’s bar chart is shown in Figure 7.

(c) Give two possible explanations, in context, for the one very tall bar in Figure 7.

4 Teru is looking at some graphs from an official UK government publication that show
patterns of employment for civil servants (central government employees) over time.

Figure 8 shows the gender balance of each civil service grade between 2010–2017.

Figure 8

Teru says that Figure 1 shows that the total number of female civil servants has
definitely increased between 2010 and 2017.

(a) Explain whether Teru is correct or not.

(2)

(b) Describe two important trends shown in Figure 8.

(2)
Question 5 continued

Teru has another graph, Figure 9, which is taken from the same official UK government
publication. It shows the percentage of civil servants from an ethnic minority for 1988
to 2017.

Figure 9 also shows the percentage of senior civil servants (SCS) from an ethnic
minority between 2006 and 2017. These were the only years for which records were
available for SCS.

Figure 9

One additional fact, A, is also shown on Figure 9 by a short dotted line.

This is:

A The percentage of the UK population from an ethnic minority in 2011 taken from
the UK Census.

(c) Give one reason why the additional fact A, included on Figure 9, provides useful
information.
(1)

(d) Write a short report for a news website on the pattern of employment of civil servants
from an ethnic minority, based on the information in Figure 9.

Make three distinct comments in an appropriate style.

5 The founding principles for 5k parkruns are still true today.
These are that a 5k parkrun should be
• free,
• weekly,
• for everyone,
• forever.

In 2005 there were 155 participants. They had a mean time to complete a 5k parkrun of
22 minutes 17 seconds.

In 2018 there were 250,000 participants. They had a mean time to complete a 5k parkrun
of 32 minutes 29 seconds.

It has been observed that, for individuals, their time to complete a 5k parkrun tends to
decrease over time.

(a) Suggest a reason for the increase in the mean time to complete a 5k parkrun between
2005 and 2018.

(1)

(b) Explain what is likely to have happened to the standard deviation of times to
complete a 5k parkrun between 2005 and 2018.
