Σ Fv=0 N N N F μ N F F Σ F=ma: − 80 kg (9.81) cos25 °=0 = 80 kg (9.81) cos25 ° = 711.27 = = (0.08) (711.27) = 56.90 N

The document analyzes the dynamic equilibrium of a skier on a 25 degree slope. It calculates the skier's acceleration parallel to the slope given their mass, velocity, and the coefficient of friction between their skis and the snow. It then uses this acceleration to calculate the skier's velocity after traveling 20 meters down the slope.

Dynamic Equilibrium in Translation: Analysis as a Rigid Body

A skier is on a 25° slope. His mass is 80kg. The kinetic

coefficient of friction between his skis and the snow is μs=0.08.
His velocity is 9 m/s.
A. What is his acceleration in the direction parallel to the slope?
B. What is his velocity when he was gone 20m. down the slope?

Solution:
a) Acceleration of the skier parallel to the slope

Σ Fv=0
N 1−80 kg(9.81) cos 25 °=0
N 1=80 kg(9.81) cos 25 °
N 1=711.27
F 1=μs N 1
F 1=(0.08)(711.27 )
F 1=56.90 N
Σ F=ma
80(9.81) sin 25 °−56.90=80 a
a=3.43 m/s 2 answer
b) Velocity of the skier when he was gone 20m. down the slope

V 2f =V 2o+ 2aS

V 2f =(9)2+ 2(3.43)(20)
V f =14.77 m/s answer
