DECEMBER 2013

QUESTION 1

a)i) Population – All mobile phone users in Malaysia.

a)ii) Primary data. The data are collected directly from the users by using questionnaire.

a)iii) Any THREE of the followings:

Gender – qualitative – pie chart / bar chat

Type pf service – qualitative – pie chart / bar chart
Age – quantitative – histogram / stem-and-leaf plot / box plot
Company of network operator – qualitative – pie chart / bar chart
Satisfaction level – qualitative – pie chart / bar chart
Subscription length quantitative – histogram / stem-and-leaf plot / box plot

a)iv) 1) Independent t-test

2) Chi-square test of independence

b)i) 40 managers

b)ii) Mode = 37
Most of the managers are 37 years old.

Median = (30+30+31+…+55) / 2 = 38.775

On the average, the age of the managers is 38.775 years old.

b)iii) Youngest = 30
Oldest = 55

b)iv) The age of the managers is skewed to the right. This means that majority of the respondents are
young managers.

QUESTION 2

Out of syllabus..!
QUESTION 3

a)i) 95% CI for the mean amount spent on groceries:

s
 x  t  ,n1
2 n
11.44
 210 .35  t 0.025,24 ( )
25
 210 .35  2.064 (2.288 )
 205 .628,215 .072 

a)ii) Based on the confidence interval in i), both lower and upper limits are greater than 200.
Therefore, we can conclude that the housewives spent more than RM200 for groceries.

a)iii) H0: µ = 200

H1: µ > 200
x   210 .35  200
Test statistic, t    4.52
s 11.44
n 25
Critical value = t0.05,24 = 1.711
Reject H0 since t > 1.711
There is enough evidence that the housewives spend more than RM200 for groceries.

b)i) H0: µcarpeted - µuncarpeted = 0

H1: µcarpeted - µuncarpeted > 0

b)ii) P-value = 0.541

Do not reject H0 since p-value > α (0.05)
Equal variances assumed.

b)iii) P-value = 0.376 / 2 = 0.188

Do not reject H0 since p-value > α (0.05)
There is no sufficient evidence to indicate that carpeted rooms contain more bacteria than
uncarpeted rooms.

b)iv) 95% CI for the mean difference = (-1.85333, 4.60333). There is no significant difference in the
mean colonies of bacteria between carpeted and uncarpeted rooms since 0 is in the interval.

QUESTION 4

a)i) A = 396 – 137.9 – 112.5 = 145.6 OR A = 396*281/764 = 145.6 OR A = 281 – 135.4 = 145.6

B
131  128.12  98  104.52  139  135.42  135  137.92  119  112.52  142  145.62  1.091
128.1 104.5 135.4 137.9 112.5 145.6

a)ii) H0: Travel packages does not depend on types of family

H1: Travel packages depends on types of family

a)iii) P-value = 0.577

Do not reject H0 since p-value > α (0.05)
Travel packages does not depend on types of family

b) Out of syllabus..!

c)i) TRUE

c)ii) TRUE

c)iii) Out of syllabus..!

c)iv) FALSE. It is determined by the value or r, not r2.

QUESTION 5

a) Based on the scatter diagram, there is a positive linear relationship between number of contacts
and sales.

b) Independent variable – number of contacts

Dependent variable – sales

c) SSXY = 5299.7
SSXX = 2508.9
SSYY = 12040.1

SS XY 5299 .7
r   0.964
SS XXSS YY (2508 .9)(12040 .1)

There is a strong positive linear relationship between number of contacts and sales.

d) Coefficient of determination, r2 = 0.930. This indicates that 93% of the total variation in sales is
explained by the number of contacts.

e) y = -9.956 + 2.112x

slope = 2.112. This indicates that when the number of contacts increase by one, sales increase
by RM2112 (2.112*1000).

f)) y = -9.956 + 2.112(39) = 72.412.

Therefore, when the number of contact is 39, sales is estimated to be RM72412.
