P1 [8p]
Calculate the Force required to pull a copper ball of radius
2.00 cm upward through a fluid at the constant speed 9.00 cm/s.
Take the drag force to be proportional to the speed, with
proportionality constant 0.950 kg/s. Ignore the buoyant force.
𝑘𝑔 𝑚
The density of copper is 𝜌 = 8920 Take 𝑔 = 9.80
𝑚3 𝑠2
Note: Use SI units of measurement.
Q2 [10p]
In the general conservation of energy equation, state which terms
predominate in describing each of the following devices and processes.
For a process going on continuously, you may consider what happens
in a 10s time interval. State which terms in the equation represent original
and final forms of energy, which would be inputs, and which outputs.
Note: To help you with the solution I have written the answer to part (a).
Meanwhile you answer the rest.
(a) a slingshot firing a pebble
Answer:
Original Elastic Potential Energy into Final Kinetic Energy

(b) a fire burning

(c) a portable radio operating

(d) a car braking to a stop

(e) the surface of the Sun shining visibly

P3 [12p]
A bullet of mass m = 8.00g is fired into a block of mass
M = 250g that is initially at rest at the edge of a table of height
h = 1.00m. (See figure below). The bullet remains in the block,
and after the impact the block lands d = 2.00m from the bottom
of the table. Determine the Initial Speed of the bullet.
𝑚
Take 𝑔 = 9.80 2 . Use SI units of measurements.

Q4 [8p]
Is the Work required to be done by an external force on an object
on a frictionless, horizontal surface to accelerate it from a speed v
to a speed 2v
(a) equal to the work required to accelerate the object
from v = 0 to v,
(b) twice the work required to accelerate the object
from v = 0 to v,
(c) three times the work required to accelerate the object
from v = 0 to v,
(d) four times the work required to accelerate the object
from 0 to v, or
(e) not known without knowledge of the acceleration?
Note: Selecting the correct choice entitles the student to 4 points
out of 8 points allocated. You have to prove it by solving it.
P5 [12p=6p+6p]
In a particular crash test, a car
of mass 1500 kg collides with a wall
as shown in the figure. The initial and
final velocities of the car are
𝑚 𝑚
𝑣⃗𝑖 = −15.0𝑖̂ and 𝑣⃗𝑓 = +2.60𝑖̂ ,
𝑠 𝑠
respectively.
Take the direction to the right
as positive. If the collision
lasts 0.150 s, find
(a) the Impulse caused
by the collision and
(b) the Average Net Force
exerted on the car by the wall.
P6 [12p=4p+8p]
A 40.0 kg box initially at rest is pushed 5.00 m along a rough, horizontal
floor with a constant applied horizontal force of 130 N. The coefficient
of friction between box and floor is 0.300.
𝑚
Take 𝑔 = 9.80 2 . Find:
𝑠
(a) the Work done by the applied force,
(b) the Increase (change) in Internal Energy in the box–floor system
as a result of friction.
Hint: For part (b) first calculate the kinetic friction force 𝑓𝑘 .
You may refer to figure below for help.
Q7 [8p]
Suppose a rod of length L is non-uniform such that its mass per unit
length varies linearly with x according to the expression 𝜆 = 𝛼𝑥,
where 𝛼 is a constant. Find the 𝑥-coordinate of the center of mass
as a fraction of 𝐿. Assume the rod lies along x-axis.
Hint:
Because the mass per unit length is not constant in this case but
is proportional to x, elements of the rod to the right are more massive
than elements near the left end of the rod.
P8 [12p=4p+8p]
A car initially travelling eastward (point A) turns
north by travelling in a circular path at uniform
speed as shown in the figure. The length of
the arc ABC is 235 m, and the car completes
the turn in 36.0 s.
Take 𝑠𝑖𝑛35° = 0.57 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐𝑜𝑠35° = 0.82.
(a) Find the car’s Average Speed.
(b) What is the Instantaneous Acceleration
when the car is at B located at an angle
of 35.0°?
Express your answer in terms of the unit vectors 𝑖̂ 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑗̂.
Hint: For part (b) you need to calculate the radius of the arc.
Q9 [8p]
This question relates to types of forces and the work done by them.
Your task here is to fill in the blanks with appropriate words.
The work done by a 1)…………………. force on a particle moving
between any two points is independent of the path taken by the particle.
The work done by a conservative force on a particle moving through
any closed path is 2)…………………
An example of a conservative force is the 3) ………………… force.
A force is non-conservative if the work done by this force
is 4) ……………. -dependent.
Example of a non-conservative force is the 5) .……………….. force.
Note: You can write next to respective numbers in the text above
the missing word.
To get you going the solution to number 1) is provided.
You solve for the rest.

1) Conservative

2) ……………………….

3) ……………………….

4) ……………………….

5) ……………………….
P10 [10p]
A block of mass 1.6 kg is attached
to a horizontal spring that has a force
constant of 1000 N/m as shown
in the figure (a). The spring is compressed
2.0 cm and is then released from rest
as in the figure (b).
Calculate the Speed of the block as
it passes through the equilibrium position
𝑥 = 0 if the surface is frictionless.
