Tutorial 2

This document contains 12 questions about hydraulic pumps. It asks about the functions of pumps, the differences between fixed and variable displacement pumps, pump components, and how to calculate volumetric efficiency, fluid power, shaft power, overall efficiency, and more based on given pump specifications and operating conditions. Example calculations are provided for determining flow rate from displacement and rpm, shaft power from flow rate and pressure rise, and efficiencies given drive torque, pressure, and flow values.

Tutorial 2 : Hydraulic Pump

1) A hydraulic pump simply creates what? Pressure? Flow? Or Both?

2) What is the difference between fixed displacement pump and variable
displacement pump?

3) Name both pumps that are presented in the above figure.

4) If a pump has a displacement volume of 25 cm3. Determine the discharge of the

pump in liter per minute if it rotates in 1420 revolution per minutes.

5) A pump delivers 35 l/min with a pressure rise of 100 bar. The overall efficiency is
87%. Calculate the shaft power in kW.

6) A pump has a nominal displacement of 50 cm3/revolutions. It delivers 72.75 l/min

at 1500 rev/min and the pressure rise is 100 bar. The shaft power is 13.57 kW.
Calculate the volumetric and overall efficiencies.

7) What is the volumetric displacement of the gear pump and its flow rate in lit/min if
the pump with a pair of gear teeth of 15 mm width, 90 mm outside diameter and
60mm inside diameter is subjected to a 1450 rpm rotational speed?

8) A variable displacement piston pump has a bent-axis angle of the pump is 30

degree with five 10 mm diameter pistons arranged in a 100 mm diameter piston
circle. What is the maximum flow of the pump in lit/min if it is subjected to 1450
rpm of rotational speed? What is the minimum flow of the piston pump and why?

9) Initially the spring positions the “B” so the pump will be at full delivery. Now, the
swash plate angle is at maximum. As the system pressure increase, the oil will push

“A” and rotate the “C” until the “B” positions the swash plate at minimum angle. This
will reduce the delivery. Name all three components.

10) A pump delivers 10 l/min with a pressure rise of 80 bar. The shaft speed is 1420
rev/min and the nominal displacement is 8 cm3/rev. The theoretical drive torque is
11.4 Nm. Calculate the volumetric efficiency, the fluid and shaft power and the
overall efficiency of the pump.

11) A pump has a displacement of 14 cm3/rev at 1440 rpm. It operates at a pressure

of 150 bar. The volumetric efficiency is 0.90 and the overall efficiency is 0.80.
Calculate the pump delivery, the input power at the pump shaft and the drive
torque at the pump shaft.

12) Consider a hydraulic pump with a fixed displacement of 100cm3/rev has the
following nominal operating condition:
Input speed shaft : 1200 rpm
Torque at input shaft : 250N.m
Output pressure : 12 Mpa
Output Delivery : 1750 cm3/s.

Determine the volumetric, mechanical and

overall efficiency of the pump. (87.5%,
76.4% and 66.85%)
