Problem Statement
In the contemporary, the danger of security and wellbeing of vehicles are on a steady
ascent. Hence, the requirement for auto security is of desperate significance. Over speeding in
clumsy zones is a significant reason for street mishaps. Mishap rates are higher in certain
regions like school zones, bumpy zones, interstates, tricky territories and so forth. In this
specific situation, Intelligent Transport Systems is a significant and creating field [1].
Vulnerable side Detection prepares the driver to be ready about the presence of another
vehicle or prevention in the vulnerable side locale, where there is more possibility for an
impact or mishap to happen. With this task, I expect to attempt to limit the danger and
Theory
2. Automobile Safety
In my project I have interfaced a microcontroller with a GPS receiver and GSM modem.
The unit is fixed onto the vehicle. A computer connected to a GSM mobile phone is setup at
the other side. The GSM modem receives the coordinate values of the location of the vehicle
GSM modem is a particular category of modem similar a mobile phone. It has a SIM card
slot and can be operated using any mobile operator. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is
3
a satellite-based navigation system. With the help of GPS satellites, a GPS device will collect
data and precisely estimate the location on earth. It was developed for the use of the United
States military. Nowadays it is the most popular navigation system in use. U.S. Department
of Defence have launched 30 satellites into the orbit currently for collecting information.
The output of the GPS modem which is displayed on the LCD, is actually the NMEA data.
The receiver which requests the location of the automobile receives this data through a
mobile.
Communication between the microcontroller interface and modems is serial and this
layout is achieved using RS-232 module. TTL voltage levels have to be changed to RS-232
voltage levels. For this purpose we use a MAX-232 IC. Sensors are useful in helping to detect
and respond to different problems and scenarios we come across in automobiles. Examples
include infrared sensors, fire detectors etc. They help us to notify the receiver in case of any
emergencies. A heat detector works in such a manner that the temperature of its heat element
increases because of the energy emitted by the fire. This helps me in detecting fires.
Temperature Sensors, Smoke Sensors etc. can also be used in fire detection.
It is highly hazardous to drive a vehicle in current traffic scenario. One of the probable risk
conditions is when the driver looking out for the impending road risk and also looking
backward in highway driving at the same time. In order to change the lane cautiously, it is
necessary to check both sideways and backward. An obstacle usually concerned by the driver
is the blind spot which is the area cannot be seen by side view and rear view mirrors. In many
accident cases it was the driver’s ignorance to check the blind spots region. It is mainly the
area on both sides of the back of the vehicle. Even after using the car mirrors the driver may
be unable to recognize that another vehicle is there in these spots. The areas that are too low
4
to see infront and back of the vehicle are also included as blind spots. Sometimes the areas
where the side vision is hindered to the left and right of the vehicle ar also included.
