Class 8 Math Worksheet 15-A

This document provides instructions and examples for students to complete a mathematics worksheet on statistics and histograms. It defines what a histogram is, the steps to create one from raw data by constructing a frequency table, and includes 4 practice questions for students to make histograms from various data sets measuring things like teacher work hours, student sleep hours, laptop and taxi fare spending.

Class 8
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Statistics
Worksheet # 15-A

Student’s Name: ___________________ Date: ___________

Objective:
By completing this worksheet, you will be able to:

 Draw and interpret Histograms with equal class intervals.

 Construct a group frequency table and its histogram.

 Histogram is a graphical display of data using bars of different heights.

 Histogram is the most commonly used graph to show frequency distributions. It looks very
much like a bar chart, but there are important differences between them.
 Histogram represents the frequency distribution of continuous data.
 A bar graph is a diagrammatic
comparison of discrete data.
 Histogram presents numerical data
whereas bar graph shows
categorical data.
 A histogram is drawn in such a way
that there is no gap between the
bars.
 To make a histogram, follow these
steps:

 On the vertical axis (y-axis), place frequencies. Label this axis "Frequency".
 On the horizontal axis (x-axis), place the lower value of each interval.
 Draw a bar extending from the lower value of each interval to the lower value of
the next interval.
 Lets learn about the construction of frequency distribution on page 465 on D2 7th
Edition.

 D2 7th Edition Chaper # 16

Q1. A survey is conducted to find out the average number of hours the teachers in a
school append on marking their students’ assignments each day. The data collected is
given in the table.
6 4 3 1 2 2 3 1 4
1 2 5 3 4 5 2 2 3
3 1 2 2 3 1 4 2

a) Construct a frequency table for the data.

b) Draw a histogram to illustrate the data.
c) What is the most common average number of hours the teachers spend on marking
their students’ assignments each day? ____________________________
d) Find the number of teachers who participated in the survey. __________
e) Find the fraction of teachers who spend an average of 3 hours making their
students’ assignments each day. ________________________________

Q2. The average amount of sleep, in hours that 30 students in a Secondary Two class get
on a weekday is given in the table.
8 7 6 4 8 9
5 3 10 6 6 5
3 8 7 5 7 4
9 8 8 5 5 5
9 4 10 9 6 5

a) Construct a frequency table for the data.

c) Calculate the percentage of students who get an average of at least 8 hours sleep
on a week day. ________________________
d) Julia says that most common average amount of sleep that students get on a
weekday is 7 hours. Do you agree with her? Explain your answer.
