L.5.6 Measuring Light Intensity

Learning objectives
Recognize the light intensity concept
Know that light intensity can be measured.
What is Light intensity ?
 Light intensity Is the amount of light in an area

Arrange the following sources according to
light intensity (descending order )

1 2 3
How can we measure the light intensity (luminous intensity) ?

(1)In the past: (2)Today:

 Light intensity measured  Light intensity measured

in candlepower with light meters
 Candlepower is the
amount of light giver by a
candle
Activity 5.6
People who need to measure light intensity

1-Film makers .

• Why ? to make sure the light intensity is exactly right for

filming

2- farmers who use the greenhouses

• Why?because many flowers and vegetable need a certain

amount of moisture ,temperature and light intensity to grow

3- Test match cricket

• Why ?because the has to play in day light ,ehen light

intensity falls to certain llevel the day’s play comes to end

5.7 How scientists measured

and understood light
Learning objectives
-Recognise the rainbow history explanation
- Identify the important of prism
- Know that the scientists have combined evidence with creative thinking to suggest new
ideas and explanations for phenomena
Rainbows

What is rainbows ?
 Rainbows formed in the sky when drops of water in the
air hits by the sun light at a certain angle

What is th Prism ?
 A tool used to split the light into seven spectrum colour
(rainbows colour)
 Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue ,Indigo and Violet

 Every rain drops is like a prism

Activity 5.7
 1 -Aristotle 4th century BCE
 He thought rainbows were caused by clouds reflecting sunlig.ht at certain angle.

 2- Ibn al-Hytham (500 years later)

 He thought rainbows was like reflection in the mirrors (Cloud like a mirror )

 3- Shen kuo (950 years ago )

 He suggests that the sunlight hit the rain to make rainbows
 4- Isaac Netown (300 yeas ago )
The first who explain rainbows accurately

 He used a prism to demonstrate that

white light of the sun is a mix of colours
 When sun light pass through a prism it
bends this called refraction .

 Why The white light splited into seven spectrum colour ?

Because the angle of bending is different for the various colours (red , orange
,yellow ,green ,blue ,indigo ,and violet?
