Tutorial 6: Truss and Friction: VDB 1023 Engineering Mechanics

The document discusses dry friction and trusses through examples involving static equilibrium. The first example determines if a crate remains in equilibrium under an applied force. The second example finds the minimum cable force needed to move a spool. The third example determines the smallest force causing impending motion of a crate and wheel system.

Tutorial 6:
Truss and Friction
(Dry Friction)

Exercise 1
The uniform crate has a mass of 40kg. If a force P = 200N is applied on to the
crate, determine if it remains in equilibrium. The coefficient of static friction
is μ = 0.3.
Answer
 Resultant normal force NC act a distance x from the crate’s center line in
order to counteract the tipping effect caused by P
 3 unknowns, 3 E-o-Es

   Fx  0;
80 cos 30  F  0
   Fy  0;
 80 sin 30  N C  196.2  0
 M O  0;
80 sin 30 (0.4m)  80 cos 30 (0.2m)  N C ( x)  0
F  69.3 N , Nc  236 N , x  9.08mm
Cont.

Points to note:
 Since x is negative, the resultant force acts (slightly) to the left of the
crate’s center line.
 No tipping will occur since x ≤ 0.4m.
 Maximum frictional force which can be developed at the surface of contact
Fmax = μsNC = 0.3(236N) = 70.8N
 Since F = 69.3N < 70.8N, the crate will not slip thou it is close to doing so.
Exercise 2
Block C has a mass of 50 kg and is confined between two walls by smooth
rollers. If the block rests on the top of the 40-kg spool, determine the
minimum cable force P needed to move the spool. The cable is wrapped
around the spool’s inner core. The coefficient of static friction at A and B are
μA = 0.3 and μB = 0.6.

Exercise 3
Determine the smallest force P that will cause impending motion. The crate
and wheel have a mass of 50kg and 25kg, respectively. The coefficient of
static friction between the crate and the ground is s  0.5 and between the
wheel and the ground s  0.3
