PS Student Program - Plan Guide

The document describes the student program/plan stack in PeopleSoft. It notes that the stack is created during the matriculation process and becomes active when a program action of "MATR" is inserted. A student can have multiple program/plan stacks, one for each academic career. The stack includes the student's academic program, plan, sub-plan and other academic details. It provides examples of academic program and plan naming conventions.

Student Program/Plan Guide

The student program/plan stack is created by the PeopleSoft Admissions

matriculation process. The student program/plan stack first becomes "Active" when
a Program Action of "MATR" (matriculation) is inserted.

A student can have multiple program/plan stacks. For each academic career, a
student's program/plan stack is grouped by Student Career Number. Each Student
Career Number should be recognized as an instance of when a student was
admitted and then matriculated into an Academic Program.

Use the Student Program/Plan component to view this stack.

1. Person (ID) Each time a new member joins the Campus Community, PeopleSoft
automatically assigns him/her a unique ID number. This ID will always identify
this person, and each Campus Community member will have one ID. Use the
ID to most effectively search for students in PeopleSoft.

You can also use Search/Match to find any ID where you do not have an SSN
or 2P number available to look up an ID with the spyglass feature.

2. Academic Career During the admissions process, applicants are assigned an academic career.
Careers are levels of academic work that represent the highest grouping of
student academic progress. Transcripts are issued by academic career.
Career is similar to the ISIS academic level, except that there are also careers
for each professional school and one for continuing education.

Your project team defined 5 careers: an undergraduate career, a graduate

career, and careers for each professional school.

An ID can be associated with more than one career.

3. Academic Program The program is the major controlling variable at the student level. Programs
represent academic centers on the Pittsburgh campus and divisions at the
regional campuses. A program is, essentially, a school—except that each must
be unique within one academic career. Inside each career, programs are the
entity that determine to what a student applies and is admitted and from which
the student ultimately graduates.

Students can be active at more than one school (in multiple programs); yet one
is designated as primary each term for enrollment and tuition calculation.

The leading character of the academic program code determines the career
Naming Conventions for
programs offered at the and/or campus having ownership.
Pittsburgh Campus:
C for Continuing Education (CGS only)
st
D for Dental Medicine (1 Professional)
st
L for Law (1 Professional)
st
M for Medicine (1 Professional)
P for Graduate Programs at the Pittsburgh campus
U for Undergraduate Programs at the Pittsburgh campus
For instance, there are two nursing programs on the Pittsburgh campus;
graduate nursing (PNURS) and one for undergraduate nursing (UNURS).
Where the code begins with a B, G, J, or T, those characters designate regional
campus programs.
B for Bradford Campus Programs
Regional Programs noted
by first letter of city: G for Greensburg Campus Programs
J for Johnstown Campus Programs
T for Titusville Campus Programs

See the Conversion Index for details about how the project team mapped the
old ISIS academic levels to the new academic programs in PeopleSoft.

4. Academic Plan An academic plan is equivalent to a major, minor or certificate (or academic
program as it was known in ISIS) and has a specific degree or objective tied to
it. It is also associated directly to an Academic Program in PeopleSoft.
A valid academic plan is required to activate a student into a term. Select the
academic plan for the student. A student can have any number of academic
plans within an academic program.
Plan codes were designed using this naming convention:

AN-ELT-BA, where the first group indicates a short description of the area of
study, i.e., AN-ELT is Anthropology and English Literature. The last group of
characters indicates the degree (BA for Bachelor of Arts).
5. Academic Sub- An academic sub-plan is tied directly to an academic plan and considered either
Plan (optional) an area of concentration or an intended field of study associated with the
University’s undecided academic plan codes.
Intended majors are identified with an IM suffix, i.e. ANTH-IM indicates that
Anthropology is the intended major sub-plan where the undergraduate student
has not yet declared a major (selected an academic plan). The plan typically
remains undeclared until the end of the student’s sophomore year.

The ISIS equivalent for academic sub-plans was the area of concentration (or
ARCO). These were assigned in ISIS, however, at the point of graduation. As a
result, the sub-plans are blank for continuing students copied from ISIS.
The intended major sub-plan is assigned on the admissions application and
activated (in student records) by the admissions matriculation process.
