Week 3 Task TBLT Reading-Jim

The document provides instructions and context for a jigsaw reading activity and TBLT rationale for an A2+ football-loving class of 3 students. For the activity, each student will read a different text about Cristiano Ronaldo and discuss what they learned. They will then work together to complete a summary table by combining information from each text. The TBLT rationale explains that the focus will be on completing the task and form will be addressed based on errors. Successful completion of the table is the assessment.

Week 3 Task

Jigsaw Reading
Class profile
In the course, it was mentioned that learners need to know around 98%
of words in the text to really understand the text. The class that I made
this jigsaw for is an A2+ teen class made up of two boys and one girl, all
of whom are football crazy. All the learners have completed the A2 Key
and passed with flyer colours, although their reading scores were right at
mid-A2 range. I have assumed that these learners will be able to handle
many of the B1 pieces of vocabulary because of their listening scores and
their ability to use many of these items in conversation. Furthermore,
their language background and interest in football will aid them in
understanding the text. I have included a CEFR analysis at the end of this
document.

Instructions for learners

1) Read your text about Cristiano Ronaldo, you have three minutes - what
interesting things did you learn? What title do you think would be good
for your text? What was your reaction to what you read?
2) Here is a summary table for Ronaldo. Work together to complete the
table with information from the text.
3) Do you believe Ronaldo is the best player ever? Discuss together.
Week 3 Task
Jigsaw Reading
TBLT rationale

Is meaning primary? - I believe so. I would plan to focus on form

following task completion, dependent on what language
errors/deficiencies arose.

Is there some communicative problem to solve? - I feel that there is.

With the reading done as a jigsaw, each learner is needed to complete
the table.

Is there some relation to a real-world activity? - I suppose the target

task would be extracting information from a text and completing a table,
something my learners do at school and will do at university in the future.

Is assessment in terms of outcome? - Yes. Successful completion of

the task is when the table has been completed. It is a closed task and so
there is only one answer for each.

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro (born 5
February 1985 in Funchal, Madeira), who many
people call Cristiano Ronaldo, is a Portuguese
footballer. He plays for the Italian club
Juventus and the Portuguese national team.
Many people think he is the greatest footballer
of all time. Also, many people believe Lionel
Messi is better, and their rivalry has been one
of the biggest in sports history.
Ronaldo is currently the second most
expensive professional football player of all
time, after moving from Manchester United to
Real Madrid for approximately £80m. At his
presentation as a Real Madrid player, 80,000
people went to see him at the Santiago
Bernabéu Stadium. This is the world record,
more than the 25-year record of 75,000
people at Diego Maradona's presentation for
Napoli.
Ronaldo was born in Funchal, Madeira Islands.
His father named him "Ronaldo" after former
U.S. president Ronald Reagan. Ronaldo grew
up in a Catholic and poor home, sharing a
room with his family members.
As a child, Ronaldo played for Andorinha from
1992 to 1995, where his father worked, and
later spent two years with Nacional.
In 1997, when he was 12, he went on a three-
day trip with Sporting CP, who signed him. He
then moved from Madeira to Alcochete, near
Lisbon, to join Sporting youth football
academy.
By age 14, Ronaldo believed he had the ability
to play semi-professionally, and agreed with
his mother to stop going to school so he could
focus on football.
Ronaldo started his professional career at
Sporting Clube de Portugal. On 7 October 2002,
Ronaldo played his first game in the Portuguese
Primeira Liga. The Manchester United manager
noticed Ronaldo in August 2003, when Sporting
defeated United 3–1. His performance was very
good and he wanted him to play for Manchester.
In 2003, Ronaldo joined Manchester United. He
wanted the number 28, but was given the
number 7. This number was also the number of
George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham.
He joined Real Madrid in July 2009. Because
number 7 was taken by Raúl González, he had to
wait until he left the club in the summer of 2010
to wear number 7.
In the 2007/08 season, he became the only
player in 25 years to win the "FIFA World Player
of the Year" and the "Young Player of the Year"
awards in the same season. In that season, he
scored 42 goals and won the European Golden
Boot.
On 18 April 2017, he became the first player to
score 100 goals in the UEFA Champions League,
after he scored a three goals against Bayern
Munich.
On 10 July 2018, he signed a contract with Italian
club Juventus.
