Due to their relatively independent strike and warm affection, cats can make a great pet for your
home, plus these felines don’t need daily walks, unlike doggies. But some people that are prone to
suffer from allergies might not enjoy these furry felines. Thankfully, there is a solution,
“hypoallergenic” for cat lovers with allergies.
Hypoallergenic is somewhat a misnomer— there are no truly hypoallergenic breeds of cats. But
some breeds produce a lower level of Fed d 1 protein, which is a protein that causes that sniffles
and sneezes when exposed to cats. The Fel d 1 protein is found in the cat’s skin, saliva, and urine.
Most people might think that they are allergic to the cat’s hair, but in fact, they are allergic to the cat’s
saliva, because when cats groom themselves they transfer that protein to their hair, which humans
can get on their hands through petting the cat. They can also acquire those allergies even if they
don’t touch them. According to Dr. William H. Millera professor of dermatology at Cornell University's
College of Veterinary Medicine, “As the cat grooms, it covers itself in its saliva which will become
aerosolized (turned into vapor) when dry. That, coupled with the cat’s habit of covering every square
inch of the house, makes cat allergen very widespread."
So those hypoallergenic cats may either produce less Fel d 1 protein or they may have minimal
dander that hold less of that protein. Here are 14 “hypoallergenic” cat breeds that make allergy
sufferers’ lives easier.
