GENERAL PHYSICS 1
Periodic Motion
Periodic motion is a motion of an object that regularly repeat—the object returns to a given
position after a fixed time interval. With little thought, we can identify several types of periodic
motion in everyday life. Your car returns to the driveway each afternoon. You return to the
dinner table every night to eat. A bumped chandelier swing back and forth, returning to the
same position at a regular rate. The Earth return to same position in its orbit around the Sun
each year, resulting in the variation among the four seasons. The Moon return to the same
relationship with the Earth and the Sun, resulting in a full Moon approximately once a month.
1. It takes 365.25 days for the Earth to complete one revolution around the sun. Calculate the
(a) period, (b) frequency, and (c)angular frequency of Earth as it revolves around the sun.
2. A vertical spring has a force constant of 125N/m. By how much meter will the spring be
compressed if a mass of 0.525kg is placed on top of it?
REFLECTION:
In this activity, I learned that how to compute the period, frequency, and the angular frequency of something that
is repeating a motion in an equal interval of time. I was able to understand further the definition of a period where
it states it is the time required to complete a cycle and why is it that frequency is the reciprocal of period. I realized
that periodic motion is like a thing doing a motion in the same way and rate all over again to the rest of its life.
Also, I learned to get the length of compression after a force was acted upon a spring carrying an object with a
given mass. I think I can incorporate this lesson for things like assembling a car since they have springs for their
wheels so that in bumpy areas the body of the car having a given mass and the wheels can be controlled by the
spring so that they will not collide. I learned that force and mass could influence how far it could extend and how
much tension has been in the system. I learned that in a stretched spring, when the block is displaced to the right
of equilibrium then the force exerted by the spring acts to the left which is similar to compressed spring where
when the block is displaced to the left of equilibrium, the force exerted by the spring acts to the right. They are
equal to the restoring force but opposite in direction.
