Plumbing Building Service Systems in Buildings

The plumbing system in buildings supplies water from underground tanks fed by municipal lines through a distribution system of pipes to outlets. The drainage system collects and removes wastewater through a network of pipes to maintain sanitary conditions. Drainage systems are designed to dispose of different types of wastewater quickly while preventing sewer gases from entering buildings. For multi-story buildings, plumbing design must account for water pressure, which may require boosting if public supply is inadequate to serve taller buildings.

1. What is the plumbing system in the building?

Plumbing system is used for water supply in buildings .It supplies water to kitchen toilet
outlets via a distribution system of pipes.
Plumbing systems in buildings consist of underground tanks which are supplied water via
municipal or water department supply lines, from there with the help of pumps and piping
distribution system water is supplied to overhead tanks and thereby due to gravity water reaches
to home outlets.

2. What is the drainage system in a building?

Drainage system is used to get rid of human wastes through a well-arranged network of
drainage pipes.
The main objective of a drainage system is to collect and remove waste matter
systematically to maintain healthy conditions in a building. Drainage systems are designed to
dispose of wastewater as quickly as possible and should prevent gases from sewers and septic
tanks from entering residential areas.

3. What are the types of drainage systems in buildings?

1. Waste water is from showers, basins, kitchen sinks, washing machines, and the like.
This is also called grey water. Normally a minimum of 75 mm dia. pipes are used for drainage
of wastewater.
2. Soil water or sewage is from WCs and urinals. This is also called black water.
Minimum of 100 mm diameter pipes are used for wastewater. When run horizontally, soil water
pipes should be run at a steeper slope, such as 1:40, as they have solids. These can be of cast
iron or of PVC.

4. What is the design of plumbing systems for multi-storey buildings?

For plumbing purposes, the term “multi-storey” is applied to buildings that are too tall to
be supplied throughout by the normal pressure in the public water mains.
These buildings have particular needs in the design of their sanitary drainage and venting
systems. Water main supply pressures of 8–12 metres (25–40 feet) can supply a typical two-
storey building, but higher buildings may need pressure booster systems. In hilly areas, the
drinking-water supply pressures will vary depending on the ground elevation.
In these cases, the water authority may have to specify areas where particular supply
pressures can be relied upon for the design and operation of buildings. Where a building of three
or more storeys is proposed a certificate should be obtained from the drinking-water supply
authority guaranteeing that the present and future public drinking-water supply pressure will be
adequate to serve the building. If the public water pressure is inadequate, suitable means shall be
provided within the building to boost the water pressure.
