This is a free, K-12 curriculum that is broken down into age-appropriate modules dealing with tools to help teach
students life skills with a focus on social and emotional needs. (K-2, 3-5, middle school and secondary). You can
download the modules for free and without signing up. The youngest students learn about fairness, being a good
friend, listening, self-control, respect and integrity among other topics. By secondary school, the modules also include
aspects around getting prepared for university, problem solving techniques, digital literacy skills such as
understanding mass media and becoming a responsible citizen, managing their life, and developing a positive work
ethic. Each lesson also includes extension activities in various subject areas. Many lessons are geared towards a
classroom with students although that could be reworked to suit an individual student. Overall, it is quite an

Scratch is a coding program which allowes students to learn how to use coding blocks to preform various tasks. The
program is laid out with tutorial videos which help students navigate different projects. They can use the program as
simply or as expansively as they wish. I used this program to teach coding this year (suggested by my students) and
they were obsessed! In the end, students were assigned to make a video game, using at least four elements of code
(motion, sensing, sound, events, control, and sensing.) I would highly recommend this program for intermediate grade

At this free website, KidsThinkDesign, find inspiration for Art, Visual Design, ADST-related projects in a number of
areas that many students would enjoy: fashion, graphics, interiors, books, products, film and theater, architecture,
animation, and the environment. Within each area, explorations are organized under the headings Product Design,
Meet a Designer, Think Like a Designer, Design a Project, and Learn More. Mini-lessons (ie. how color impacts
purchasing decisions) extend learning. Each project includes a list of supplies, clear step-by-step instructions, sample
images, and background information. There are also links to other sophisticated design content on the Web, like the
National Building Museum, a Frank Lloyd Wright website, and the Design Dossier. There is an option to print out
projects. Large text, colour-coded pages, logical icons, and images are well-organized and help to make the
information more accessible. It would be easy to integrate skills like mapping, written expression, and speaking, and
possibly social studies (depending on the choices selected).
Two notes of caution:
The site asks kids to self-report their birthday and give a parent's or teacher's email address for design submissions,
but this could be set up ahead of time with fake birthdays.
Common Sense Media rates this is 4 stars.

At this free website, students are encouraged to innovate through fun engineering problems. Students can choose to
watch, design, build, or play a game. The Watch section offers Design Squad TV episodes and videos of everyday
science. Closed Captioning is available. The design section challenges learners to write, draw, or remix an already
existing design, or to participate in a monthly challenge. The challenges are my favourite part of the site and with an
account, students (or the class under the teacher name) can earn recognition. Some of the challenges relate to
community or global solutions that benefit others or relate to real-world problems that impact people with disabilities,
communities without electricity, or marine animals surrounded by trash. In Build, students find ideas for hands-on
projects. The Games section has games that teach engineering and design concepts. Accounts are not required

The Western Canadian Learning Network (WCLN) is a consortium school districts within BC, Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon, and NWT who work together to support distance learning, alternate, and
blended learning programs and support classroom teachers with ideas and lesson/course resources. Teachers
have developed online course materials, videos, and games that can be used by all members. Some districts pay
for memberships that allow them to host entire courses on their district learning management system; some
teachers make accounts to use “bits and pieces” in their classrooms or online. Teacher accounts are free - to
