Lab Report Chm256 Exp 4

This document reports on an experiment to determine the percent content of acetic acid in vinegar through acid-base titration. The experiment involves: 1) Standardizing a NaOH solution against an HCl solution of known concentration. 2) Titrating samples of vinegar that have been diluted with a known volume of water against the standardized NaOH solution. 3) Using the titration data and stoichiometric calculations to determine the molarity and concentration of acetic acid in the original, undiluted vinegar sample. The percentage of acetic acid determined in the vinegar sample was 0.7%.

ACID BASED TITRATION I

1. State the objective of the experiment.

2. Describe the procedure to determine acetic acid in vinegar (in brief). .

3. Results / Data

A. Standardization of NaOH solution

4. Questions

a) Write a balanced equation for the reaction between NaOH and HCl.

NaOH + HCL → NaCL + H2O

b) Using the data above and the stoichiometric ratio from the equation, calculate the
exact molarity of the NaOH solution.

MaVa = MbVb

HCL, molarity = 0.12M volume = 20mL

NaOH, molarity = ? volume = 24.60mL

MaVa = MbVb

Ma(0.0246) = (0.12)(0.02)

Ma =

2.4  10^ 3
0.0246

Ma = 0.098M #

c) Write the chemical equation for the reaction between acetic acid (CH3COOH) and
NaOH solution.
CH3 COOH + NaOH → CH3 COONa + H2O

d) Determine the w/v % of acetic acid in the vinegar sample.

i) Using (MaVa / MbVb) = a/b, determine the molarity of the diluted acetic acid.

MaVa/MbVb = 1/1

MaVa = MbMb

(0.098)(0.0237) = Mb(0.020)

Mb =

2.3226  10^ 3
0.02

= 0.116M #

ii) In the procedure 10 mL of the or ginal vinegar has been diluted to 100 mL
i
Calculate the molarity of the concentrated (original) vinegar. (M1V1=M2V2)

iii) Calculate the mass of acetic acid (MW 60 g/mol) and then calculate % w/v of
acetic acid in the vinegar sample.

% w/v = mass of acetic acid x 100

volume of sample
e) Explain why you need to standardize NaOH solution after preparation.

f) In this experiment HCl solution from Experiment 3 is used as a secondary standard

solution to standardize NaOH solution. Define secondary standard solution.

g) Draw a titration curve for the titration between acetic acid (CH3COOH) and NaOH
solution.

5. Conclusion

At the end of this experiment we are able to determine the content percent of acetic acid in
vinegar through titration using a standard solution of NaOH. The percentage of acetic acid
in vinegar is 0.7%. We also determine the molarity of diluted acetic acid in the vinegar
sample which is 0.116M.
