INPUTS 1.0 Etymology:
1.1 Latin - liturgia, a system of public worship
1.2 Greek - leitourgia, public service, public office
- leitourgos, public servant, minister, priest
- leos (stem leit),variant of laos, people, multitude
- ergon, variant of werg, work

2.0 Liturgy, Meaning of:

2.1. In Christian tradition, it means the participation of the People of
God in the “work of God”. Through the liturgy, Christ (our
Redeemer and High Priest) continues the work of our redemption
in, with, and through His Church.

2.2 In the New Testament, the word liturgy refers to the celebration of
divine worship (PRIESTHOOD); also to the proclamation of the
Gospel (PROPHETIC) and to active Charity (KINGLY).

2.3 Today’s Canon defines LITURGY – is an exercise of the priestly office

of Jesus Christ by the use of signs and symbols perceptible to the
senses

3.0 In a liturgical celebration…

3.1 The liturgy is an exercise of the priestly office of Jesus Cnrist
3.2 It presents man’s sanctification under the guise of signs
perceptible to the senses.

3.3 Public worship is performed by the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ,

that is, by the Head and its members.

3.4. It celebrates the Paschal Mystery, by which Christ accomplished

the work of our salvation. Paschal is the passion, death
resurrection and ascension of our Lord; a fulfillment of the
Passover in the Old Testament.

3.5 Dying, Christ destroyed our death; rising,He restored ourlife;

.
3.6. It was from the side of Christ, as He slept the sleep of death
upon the cross, that there came forth the wondrous sacraments of
the whole Church.

4.0 Dimensions of Liturgy:

4.1 The Father is adored as the source and goal of liturgy.Through his
Son Jesus, He fills us with the Holy Spirit who contains all gifts.
:
4.2 The first liturgical dimension is that the Church by her
adoration blesses the Father “for his inexpressible gift; and

4.3 The second dimension is that the church presents her own gifts to
the Father, begging Him to send the Holy Spirit upon the Church
and upon all the faithful,

5.0. Structure:
5.1 When Jesus said: “Receive the Holy Spirit,” He gave the apostles
Sanctifying Power and made them His sacramental signs; and

5.2 They gave the same Spirit to their successors giving structure to the
Church’s liturgical life, and is handed on by the sacrament of Holy
Orders.

6.0. Presence – Christ is always present in all liturgical celebrations:

6.1 He is present in the Mass in the Eucharistic species, and not just in
the person of the minister.

6.2 Christ is the one who baptizes.who speaks in the Scriptures,

and is present when the church prays: “ Where two or three
are gathered in my name, I am in their midst.”

6.3 Christ always associates Himself with the Church (His bride); and
the church worships the Father through Christ.

70. Heaven’s Liturgy:

7.1 We have a foretaste of the heavenly Jerusalem in our
earthly liturgy,where Christ is the minister of the Sanctuary;

7.2 We sing with all the heavenly warriors, venerating the saints

7.3 We eagerly await our Lord Jesus so we can appear with him
in glory

7.4 The liturgy is the work of the Spirit and the Church.

8.0 Celebrants:
8.1 The liturgy is celebrated by the “whole Christ” (Christus
totus), including celebrants In heaven and on earth.

8.2 We participate in this heavenly liturgy whenever we celebrate

the holy priesthood of Christ.

8.3 Mother Church wants the faithful to have active participation

Because they are a “royal priesthood,” and have a right and
obligation coming from their baptism.

9.0 Leitourgos:
9.1 Not all members of the Church have the same function. Each
should carry out all and only those parts whch pertains to his
office.

9.2 Ordained ministers are called by God and consecrated by

Holy Orders, They are an “icon” of Christ and act in the
person of Christ.

9.3 The Ministry of the bishop (as well as priests and deacons) is
most evident in the Eucharist.

9.4 Other particular ministries (servers, readers, commentators, choir)

although not consecrated by Holy Orders, exercise true liturgical

functions. Therefore the whole assembly acts in the liturgy,

10.0 Ministers of the Liturgy:

10.1 Bishop - is the shepherd, moderator, promoter, guardian,

and president of the liturgy in his diocese.

10.2 Presbyters -they are participants in the priesthood but dependent

upon the bishops. They are referred to as priests of the same
order.

10.3 Deacons - administer baptism; give Holy Communion and care for
the Eucharist; assist at and bless marriages; carry viaticum; read
the Scriptures to the people; exhort and instruct the people;
administer sacramantals; officiate at funeral and burial services.

10.4 Christian faithful - they should actively participate in liturgy,

rooted in the common priesthood of the faithful.

10.5 Parents - perform their sanctifying office by the Christian

style of their married life and by the Christian upbringing of
their children.

11.0 Essential Qualities of the Liturgy :.

11.1 Trinitarian and Paschal– the liturgy is directed to the Father,
through His Son, and the Holy Spirit. Its specific Trinitarian form
takes on a Paschal quality since the liturgy celebrate our actual
salvation worked by the Blessed Trinity through Christ’s Paschal
Mystery..

11.2. Ecclesial – Liturgy is the prayer of the Church gathered in

an ordered assembly. An ecclesial activity celebrated by the
whole Christ (Christus Totus), Head and members. This is
important for Filipino Catholics because it draws them
beyond family bond toward a community solidarity based
on faith in Christ.

11.3 Sacramental – the liturgy celebrates the Church’s prayer

through patterns of symbols, ritual movements, gestures and
verbal formulas that create a framework within which the
corporate worship of the Church can take place.

Predominant symbols used in the liturgy:

11.3.1 Gathering of the baptized assembly
11.3.2 The natural symbols from creation: (light, darkness,
water, oil and fire)

11.3.3 Humanly produced symbols: (bread and wine)

11.3.4 Christian salvific symbols: ( reading and interpreting

The Scriptures, sign of the Cross, Paschal Candle,
laying of Hands)

11.4 Ethically Oriented – the liturgy relates directly to moral life.

One goal of liturgical celebrations is that we the faithful are
strengthened in faith, confirmed in hope, and inspired with
the power of love. The liturgy confirms our mission to be the
light of the world.

11.5. Eschatological – God’;s kingdom, already begun has

not yet been fully accomplished. The liturgy
commemorates Christ’s past saving Mystery, and points to
the future glory yet to come.
