Reviewing the Workforce Diversity in Public Administration

Summary

Workforce diversity is the bringing together of a variety of people to one workplace. This

workplace would be comprised of people with a wide range of experiences, backgrounds and

characteristics. Workforce diversity is an undeniable challenge in the field of public

administration. Society now a days is getting multifaceted and diverse where individuals have

identities based on gender, age, religion, physical ability, race, educational background, culture

etc. Globalization, internationalization & rapid technology advancement change the work force

diversity and population, it require greater efforts toward hiring and retaining diverse employees.

The change brought due to globalization demands learning, in order to be competitive. The

developed countries has highlighted as an archetypal of success and implementing best industrial

practices. Workforce diversity in the field of public administration has its region in

representative bureaucracy. Initial researches of representative bureaucracy related to social

class. The dynamics of government organizations are changing due to change in culture and

society. Diversity of workforces and workplaces is a significant and crucial concern for

contemporary public management. By understanding, managing and valuing the similarities and

differences among the workforce of public organization will result in competitive diverse

employees at all levels of organizations. Managing Workforce Diversity effectively has a

positive effect on competitive Advantage. Competitive advantage is an element of strategy that

gives an organization a distinctive competence. This competence and advantage stem from the

process in which the management of diversity positively affects organizational behavior and

effectiveness. Increasing workforce diversity has a number of benefits including creativity,

innovation; positive reputation and, having different perspectives at your business can increase

your creativity and allow people to positively collaborate with one another. This collaboration

could bring additional innovation and the ability for your business to stay ahead in these

changing times. Workforce diversity effect on the performance of Human Resource functions.

Workplace diversity affects the development of interpersonal relationships, how supervisors and

managers interact with staff and how employees interact with them. It also affects human

resources functions, such as record keeping, training, recruiting and requirements for HR staff

expertise. In many ways, workplace diversity increases HR responsibilities and holds the

department accountable for functions mandated by law. Diversity carries with it a tangible

number of benefits, but it also entails new challenges and obstacles to overcome. A company that

can successfully manage a diverse workplace has a solid advantage over companies that do not

embrace diversity so readily. With diversity comes new means of expression, as employees from

different cultures and backgrounds communicate in slightly different ways. This can lead to

confusion and frustration, and may cause of lost the productivity.
