hardware device. It provides the necessary instructions for how the device

Examples of firmware include:

 The BIOS found in IBM-compatible Personal Computers.

How does the firmware work?

For example, on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone with Android, the firmware on the


smartphone allows the hardware to communicate correctly with the Android operating
system and do what is requested by the user. We often tend to think about a hardware
device as a device that is just hardware.

What are the advantages of firmware?

Firmware can either provide a standardized operating environment for more complex


device software (allowing more hardware-independence), or, for less complex devices,
act as the device's complete operating system, performing all control, monitoring and
data manipulation functions.
