2-D SINGLE VARIABLE SCALAR 3-NODED LINEAR RECTANGULAR ELEMENT

Consider a two dimensional domain in the x-y plane subjected to prescribed boundary conditions
(thermal loads and supports). We will solve for the distribution of primary dependent variable
(temperature) in the plate. We will assume temperature for the primary dependent variable because
at one node, there can be only one temperature. Since temperature is a scalar parameter, this
element is also a scalar element. We will not consider the deformation of the element due to
thermal loading.

Let us mesh this plate with rectangular elements. Refer Fig. 1. Consider one single rectangular
element in the mesh. Refer Fig.2. We use local coordinate system ( x , y ) for this element instead of
the global coordinate system ( x, y ) . The length and breadth of the rectangular element are s and t.
The nodal coordinates for nodes 1, 2, 3 and 4 of this element are ( 0, 0 ) mm, ( s, 0 ) mm, ( s, t ) mm
and ( 0,t ) respectively. The primary dependent scalar variables (displacement, temperature,
pressure, etc.) at these nodes 1, 2, 3 and 4 are u1 , u2 , u3 , and u4 , respectively. Our aim is to find
the primary dependent variable u at any generic coordinate P ( x, y ) in terms of the known nodal
values u1 , u2 , u3 , and u4 and interpolation functions N1 , N 2 ,N 3 and N 4 , i.e.,
u = N1u1 + N 2u2 + N 3u3 + N 4u4 . We need to find the interpolation functions N1 , N 2 ,N 3 and N 4 for
this element.

Let us assume the approximation for the primary dependent variable u as

u =a + bx + cy + dxy …………………..(1)

To find the values of the constants a, b, c and d , we use the boundary conditions.

Boundary condition (1): At node 1 ( 0, 0 ) , u = u1 . u1 = a

u2 − u1
Boundary condition (2): At node 2 ( s, 0 ) , u = u2 . u2 = a + bs = u1 + bs ⇒b=
s
u4 − u1
Boundary condition (3): At node 4 ( 0, t ) , u = u4 . u4 = u1 + ct ⇒c=
t

u2 − u1 u −u u −u +u −u
BC(4): At node 3 ( s, t ) , u = u3 . u3 = u1 + s + 4 1 t + dst ⇒ d = 1 2 3 4
s t st

Substituting the values of a, b, c and d in equation (1) and collecting the coefficients of
u1 , u2 , u3 and u4 , we get
