Lesson Finding the Area of Irregular Figures
Made Up of Squares and Rectangles
and Triangles, Parallelograms and
Trapezoids

’s In

Look at the figures below.

A. 8 cm

How do you find the area of a square?

By multiplying the side by its side or
A=s×s
= 8 cm × 8 cm
= 64 sq. cm

B.
6m

15 m

How do you find the area of rectangle?

By multiplying the length by its width or
A= L× W
= 15 m × 6 m
= 90 sq. m

5
C.
1
5m A= (b × h)
2
1
10 m = (10 m × 5 m)
D. 2
5m = 25 sq. m

6m A = (b1+ b2) x h
2
= (5 m + 6 m) x 6 m
6m 2
= 33 sq. m

E. A=b×h
4m
= 10 m × 4 m
= 40 sq. m

6
Whose garden is it?

What can you say about the shape of their garden?

How will you find the area of irregular figures made up of squares and
rectangles using sq. cm and sq. m?

Solution 1
3m
There are two rectangles formed.

Area of rectangle A → 3 m × 5 m
6m B 5m = 15 sq. m

A 3m
Area of rectangle B → 3 m × 6 m
= 18 sq. m

Total area of the figure→ 15 sq. m + 18 sq. m

= 33 sq. m

Solution 2

3m
There are two figures formed, a
A square and a rectangle.
5m Area of Figure A → 3 m × 3 m
B = 9 sq. m
3m
Area of Figure B → 8 m × 3 m
8m = 24 sq. m
Total area of the figure→
9 sq. m + 24 sq. m = 33 sq. m

is It

20 m
1. A = (b1+ b2) x h
2
10 m
= (20 m + 35 m) x10 m
2
A = 275 sq. m.
35 m

1
2. A= (b × h)
2
60 cm 1
= (50 cm × 60 cm)
2
50 cm A = 1500 sq. cm.

3. A=b×h
5m
= 10 m × 5 m
10 m
A = 50 sq. m.

Remember:
To find the area of an irregular shape that is made up of squares and
rectangles:
1. Divide or cut the figure into squares and rectangles.
2. Find the area of the squares or rectangles made.
3. Add the area of the squares and or rectangles made to find the area
of the irregular figure.
4. Use the given formula in finding the area of trapezoid, triangle, and
parallelogram.
