Illustrate Segments and Sector of A Circle. Solves Problem On Circle

This document discusses sectors and segments of a circle. It defines a sector as a region bounded by two radii and an arc of a circle. The area of a sector is a fractional part of the total circular area, based on the central angle. It also defines a segment as a region bounded by a chord and the arc subtended by that chord. The area of a segment is calculated by subtracting the area of the triangle formed by the chord from the area of the corresponding sector. Several examples are provided to demonstrate calculating areas of sectors and segments.

Sectors and Segments of a Circle

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students will;

 Illustrate segments and sector of a circle.

 Solves problem on circle.

Area of a sector of a circle

A sector of a circle is a region bounded by two radii and an arc of a circle. In a figure below the shaded
part is a sector.

1
The area of a sector of a central angle of 90°is the area of the entire circle.

Where A = area of a sector

C/m = measure of the central angle

R = =radius
Example 1. Find the area of a sector with a central angle of 60° and a radius of 9cm.

Example 2. The measure of the arc of a sector of a circle is 45°. The length of the radius is 8cm. Find the
area of a sector.

Area of a Segment of a Circle

Is a region bounded by a chord and the arc subtended by the cord. It is a portion of the area of the circle
cut off by a chord.

The area of a segment can be determine by subtracting the area of a triangle formed by the chord and the
radii from the area of the corresponding sector.

Example Find the area of the segment.

Solution:

Step 1. Find the area of the sector.

Step 3, Find the area of the segment.
\ Area of a segment = Area of a Sector – Area of a Triangle

The area of a segment is approximately 2.3cm2.
An alternative method to find the area of a ∆ AOB is suggested below.

In 30-60-90 triangle, the length of the hypotenuse is twice of the length of the shorter leg and the length of the
longer leg √ 3times the length of the shorter leg.

Area of ∆ AOB= bh= ( 5 ) ( 2.5 √ 3 )=10.82531755 Hence,

Example 4. Find the area of the segment.

Solution:
Step 1. Find the area of a sector.

Step 2. Find the area of ∆ AOB .
