Final Exam Name:

STAT 400, Spring 2021

Due May 18th, 8am Section:

HONOR PLEDGE: I pledge on my honor that I have not given or received any unauthorized assistance
on this examination. Signature: ................

Open-book, open-notes exam. Talking to people about the exam questions, receiving/giving help or
asking for help IS NOT ALLOWED. Show all your work for full credit. Make sure to explain your
steps.

1. Let X denote the wait time(in minutes) for a customer to be seated at a restaurant and assume
that X has an exponential distribution with parameter λ = 0.1. The waiters/waitresses bring
water to the table at a random point within 5 minutes after the customer is seated. This means
that the time until the water is served, denoted as Y, has uniform distribution on the interval
[0, 5]. Additionally assume that X and Y are independent.

(a) (2 pt) Derive the joint probability density function of X,Y. Explain how you derived it.

(b) (2pt) Find the probability that for a customer getting a table and receiving water takes in
total less than 4 minutes. Explain your computation.

(c) (2 pt) Compute the expected value of X + Y . Make sure to explain the steps.

(d) (2 pt) Layla is a customer of this restaurant. She thinks that the cost of the time spent for
waiting is L(X, Y ) = 2X + Y 2 . Find the expected value of L(X, Y ).

(e) (1pt) For Majnun, who is also a customer, the cost function is LM (X) = 5X + 4, calculate
the expected value of LM (X).
2. Assume that Ava takes a bus to work every morning. Let X denote her wait time for the bus in
a morning, assume that X has an exponential distribution with λ = 0.1. The value of random
variable X for the next 7 day will be observed. Let X1 denote the wait time in the first day, X2
is the wait time in the second day,.... X7 is the wait time in the 7th day,

(a) ( 2 points) With your current knowledge can you compute the Prob (X1 ≥ 9)? if yes,
compute it, if not explain why it can not be computed.

(b) (1 points) Similarly with your current knowledge, can you compute the Prob (7X1 ≥ 63), if
yes, calculate it. Compare this probability to the probability in (a) in magnitude (smaller,
larger, equal, ...etcetera).

(c) (2 points) Let T7 denote the total wait time in 7 days, i.e T7 = X1 + X2 + X3 .... + X7 .
Calculate and compare the mean and variance of T7 and 7X1 . Can you conclude that T7
and 7X1 have the same distribution, explain why.

(d) (2 points) Let X̄121 denote the average value for 121 independent observation from the
distribution X. What kind of distribution (the type and values of all relevant parameters)
does X̄121 follow approximately? Explain with reasons.

(e) (2 points) Compute the Prob(X̄121 ≥ 9). Is the probability you computed an approximate
value to the true probability or is it the exact value? Explain your computation.
3. Compute the below probabilities.

(a) ( 2 points) There is a 50–50 chance that Mrs Queen carries the gene for hemophilia. If
she is a carrier, then each son has a 50–50 chance of having hemophilia independently of
one another . Given that Mrs Queen has had three sons without the disease, what is the
probability that she is a carrier? Hint: You are asked to find a conditional probability here.
Explain your solution.

(b) (2 points) The probability that a baby survives delivery is 0.99. However, 15 percent of all
births involve Cesarean (C) sections, and when a C section is performed, the baby survives
with prob 0.96. If a randomly chosen pregnant woman does not have a C section, what is
the probability that her baby survives? Explain your solution.
4. (4 points) Assume that body masses of Goldfinch birds follow a normal distribution with standard
deviation equal to 0.04 oz. An ornithologist would like to make some inference about the average
body mass of Goldfinch birds. In particular, she would like to create a formula to compute 70 %
confidence interval formula for the average body mass of this specie. Her equipment allows her
to sample 10 birds, using the 10 independent measurements CREATE the formula to generate
70% confidence intervals. Explain the crucial steps.
5. Let p be the probability of getting a Tail when a particular coin is tossed (you should assume
that outcomes of different tosses are independent). In an experiment this coin is to be tossed 20
times, and X is defined as the total number of tails observed. We have resources to repeat the
above experiment 5 times. Let X1 , X2 , X3 , X4 , X5 denote the outcomes for the 5 experiments.

(a) (2 points) Write the joint probability mass function for X1 , X2 , X3 , X4 , X5 . Explain how
you derived it.

(b) (2 points) Assume that X1 = 5, X2 = 14, X3 = 8, X4 = 10, X5 = 4. Calculate the value

of p, that minimizes the above function at the current observed values of Xi ’s. Show your
work.
