What is meant by

communication barriers?
Describe the types of Communication
barriers
Many problems encountered in our business and personal lives result from
miscommunication. What the recipient understand by a message may not
always be the message which is the sender intended. Several communication
barriers exist between sender and they may be responsible for a message not
being understood correctly.
“Communication when it is impeded and does not reach the receiver is often
somewhat ineffective and the impediments are known as barriers”
-C.B. Mamoria

A. Organizational Barrier : There are many reasons of organizational
barriers. Some of them are following:
1. Negative organizational climate: When a top management are
negative attitudes for good communication that is the big
communication barrier.
2. Absence of communication policy: Every company maintain a
communication policy for internal and external communication.
Otherwise, the company’s employers deprive from better
communication .
3. Excessive organizational layers: When a company make a excess
management stages then top management cannot reach lower
management team. For this, gap or distortion of information results.
4. Filtering of information: Filtering information means that
sometimes subordinate willing hide or misguide the information to the
top management. This type of flattering for the top management is the
communication barriers.
B. Individual barriers: In the communication stage a sender and
receiver face problem that is called individual barriers.
1. Difference in personality: Man to man vary their personality.
Every man have their own personality. That is why naturally
communication barriers occurs in the personality. Personality means
that every person have the combination of mental and moral quality
that make a person different from another character. This difference
from man to man is the barriers of communication.
2. Perceptual difference: Perception means observation or
analysis of a certain subject. Which differs from man to man. That is
why some time communication barriers occurs for perceptual
difference.
3. Fear: Fear of criticism or shortage of information. Some time
management person can not be interested to communicate with other
for fear.
4. Preconceived ideas: This is one of the most common barriers
to communication. Like “manpower business” some “NGOs” are bad
idea in our country.
5. Status consciousness: Employers and officers of any
organization are very much aware of their respective positions and
status. Due to this consciousness subordinate hesitate or suppress to
communicate any unpleasant or unfavorable information to the boss.
On the other hand, superiors sometimes avoid exchanging views with
the juniors are fail to communicate properly.
6. Inattention: Inattentiveness may also be one of the major
barriers to communication. Receiver may be in attentive to the
sender’s message for several reasons. One such reasons is destruction.
C. Language/ semantic barriers: Almost all communication is language
based. But this language itself becomes a barrier when it adversely
affects the communication process.
1. Local dialect: Local dialects may also act as a barrier to
communication. Different regions may have their own dialects. Thus when
people of a region using their local dialect, neither any part of the
communication can understand each other.
2. Use of different language: This type of barrier is created when a
sender uses various types of language but receiver is not that much expert to
understand different language other than that of his mother tongue.
3. Technical words: It is not expected of every man to understand
everything equally. These words may not be understandable to the receiver
in the sense intended by the sender. If these technical words are not clearly
and properly understood by the recipient the purpose of communication
would not be achieved.
4. Poor expression: The purpose of communication is to clearly inform
the receiver of the intention of the sender. This some times may not be
possible because of the inability of the sender to express his idea as
appropriate to the receiver poor expression make wrong message to
receiver.
5. Different interpretations: Barriers may also develop because of
difference in interpretation of messages. This may happen when receivers
and senders attribute different meanings to same words or attribute to same
meaning of different words.

D. Other Barriers:
1. Information Overloaded Condition: If people are overloaded with
information they simply fail to screen out which information is worth
reacting. As a result, they cannot absorb or adequately response to all of the
messages sent to him.
2. Time: Communication at the wrong time may also act as a barrier.
Discussion of a sensitive issue with the person when he is about to leave for
an urgent meeting is almost certain to end in failure.
3. Interferer: Physical interference like illegible hand writing , bad
copies etc. also act as a barrier to communication.
4. Absence of Feedback: In the absence of feedback, it becomes one
way communication creating an auto critic environment which is
neither desirable not feasible in this days. For this reason, absence of
feedback act as a barrier to effective communication.
5. Noise: The word noise literally means a high sound which
obstructs good communication. Noise is a great barrier to a smooth
flow of oral communication.
These are the barriers of good or effective communication.
