COURSE SYNTHESIS
Date: January 7, 2021

Name : YARREL ANNE G. MUAÑA

Program : MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION- ADMINISTRATION AND
SUPERVISION
Subject EDUC-610 EPCD
Professor : RONALD M. RAMIREZ, CHP, PH. D.

Summary of the topic:

The course EDUC-610 which also known as Educational Planning and Curriculum pertains to the
development of a curriculum to meet the current needs of the students and the specified
school level. An integral aspect of learning is the curriculum, it is generally defined as the
entirety of experiences that take place in the educational process for students. This course
provides a wider perspective for the teachers about the curriculum planning, designing,
implementing and evaluating as part of the teaching and learning process.
The next step after a curriculum planning and designing is to implement it and what has been
planned and designed should be put into action. There are people who are involved in
curriculum implementation in some various ways and they are called stakeholders.
Stakeholders influenced and contributed in the development of school curriculum. The role of a
teacher is to bring more importance to the different classroom activities and to make the day of
the learners more interesting, engaging and meaningful. It also tells what the implementation
of curriculum is all about and how it varies to curriculum development. And, determines the
component of curriculum implementation and others. There are also four phases in
implementing the curriculum, which serves as a guide, and these are the planning, selecting the
contents and methods, implementing and evaluating. Well, the success of learning depends on
the implementation effort.
The next topic is all about Evaluating the Curriculum and Teacher as a Curriculum Evaluator, it
partakes how important the evaluation is because the effectiveness of the new curriculum
needs to be evaluated. Curriculum specialists proposed a different curriculum evaluation
models which consists of Bradley's effectiveness model, Tyler-objective-centered model and
Stufflebeam's context, input, process, product model. These models help identify the parameter
of evaluation, the principles to be analyzed and the methods to be used to obtain significant
data. These models have different perspectives but it's very useful and helpful for classroom
teachers and practitioners and in evaluating the curriculum also. The next discussion is about
the different aspects of curriculum evaluation. It has been revealed that the evaluation is both a
tool and a process. As a tool, it help the teachers and program implemeters to judge the worth
and merit of the program and innovation or curricular change while as a process, it follows a
procedure based on models and frameworks. Well, for both process and a tool, the results of
evaluation will be the basis to improve the curriculum. The purpose of curriculum evaluation
and the aim of the evaluation which is to collect data that allows one to decide whether to
accept, change or eliminate the entire curriculum has been tackled. Also, to identify the
strengths and weaknesses as well as the problems encountered in the implementation and to
enhance the process of curriculum development. The role of the teacher in the curriculum
evaluation greatly affects the decision in accepting, modifying or eliminating the curriculum. In
some aspects, many educational practitioners agree that the measures of one's teaching is
indicated by what the children have learned. So, teacher as a curricularist should take into
account that one cannot assess, what was not taught, nor implement what was not planned.
The last topic is all about Curriculum Development Reforms and Enhancement. In this topic, the
timeline of the educational system in our country was made to track the need to reform and
enhance a curriculum. The timeline began 1521 towards 1946 up to present. The reporter
explained the curriculum or the way of teaching the learners during the pre-Hispanic period,
the Spanish regime, the American regime, the invasion of Japan right up to the Second World
War. Education was really a product of the time and the intentions of the individuals who
implemented it. The reasons why the Philippines should switch to K-12 curriculum were also
tackled. And, Philippines is the only country in Asia having a 10 years basic education, poor
quality of education and too many non-practical subjects, these were metioned as some of the
reasons in switching to K-12 curriculum. On the other hand, the OBE: Basis for Enhanced
Teacher Education Curriculum and its definition were discussed. According to Spady, there are
four principles of OBE, the Principle I- Clarity of Focus, Principle II- Designing Backwards,
Principle III- High Expectations and the Principle IV- Expanded Opportunities. The assessment
of learning in OBE and the desired outcome of the teacher education program anchored in OBE
and stipulated in the NCBTS are also part of this topic. The reporter also discussed the
characteristics and qualities of an ideal teacher, which I believe to be very useful in identifying
such competencies to future teacher. In addition to this topic, there was also a discussion to
Curricular Landscape in the 21st Century classrooms. The discussion started about the
characteristics of the curriculum in the 21st century and followed by the cluster of skills for the
21st century with specific descriptions which consists of the learning and Innovation skills,
knowledge, information, media and technology literacy skills, life skills as well as the citizenship
skills, are known to be the 21st century learners in the curriculum. Also, The five frames of
thinking by Howard Gardner and the 7R's Quality curriculum material must use properly in
order to survive the future. The curriculum for this 21st century should inspire and challenge
both the teacher and the learner.
In conclusion, this course will be of great help in my teaching journey and the topics being
reported were very important to all teachers. I truly believe that all the things I have learned
will help me to understand what teaching really is, and why all of these things need to be
learned. Well, regardless of the curriculum, and even how many times it changes, learners are
still at the center of teaching. Apparently, the teacher has a significant role and direct
implication to the life of the learners.
