1. Complete Case Problem 5.2: Herding the Patient

2. Complete problem 6-3, 6-4 and 6-19

Case Problem 5-2 Herding the Patient

Bayside General Hospital is trying to streamline its operations.

A problem-solving group consisting of a nurse, a technician, a doctor, an administrator, and a patient is
examining outpatient procedures in an effort to speed up the process and make it more cost-effective.
Listed here are the steps that a typical patient follows for diagnostic imaging:

1. Create a service blueprint of the procedure and identify opportunities for improvement.
2. Describe what elements of a servicescape would make this service more palatable to the
customer and efficient for the hospital staff.

Description of the Process

1 Patient enters main hospital entrance

2 Patient takes a number and waits to be called to registration desk
3 Patient registers
4 Patient is taken to diagnostic imaging department
5 Patient registers at diagnostic imaging reception
6 Patient sits in department waiting area until dressing area clears.
7 Patient changes in dressing area.
8 Patient waits in dressing area.
9 Patient is taken to exam room.
10 Exam is performed.
11 Patient is taken to dressing area.
12 Patient dresses
13 Patient leaves.

Key Issues:
- Multiple waiting period
- Double registration
- Labour involved in transporting patients
Opportunity of Improvement:
- Online or Electronic registration – patient can sign up register online / upon arrival. (eliminates double
registration,
- Have good layout of rooms OR clear signs so that patience can navigate on their own (eliminate
transporting labours)

P6-3. (LO 6.1)

Mikey W. Smitty, an emerging rapper, is getting ready to cut his first CD, called “Western Rap.” The cost of
recording the CD is $5000, but copies are $5 a piece. If the CDs can be sold for $15 each, how many CDs
must be sold to break even?
What is the break-even point in dollars?

C = $5,000 VC = $5 SP = 15

P = (SP – VC)x – FC
0 = (15-5)x – 5,000 Mikey will have to sell 500 CDs to
5,000 = 10x generate $7,500 to break-even
X = 500

P6-4 (LO 6.1)

Mikey W. Smitty is confident that demand for his “Western Rap” CD will substantially exceed the break-
even point computed in Problem 6-3. So, Mikey is contemplating having his CD cut at a classier (and pricier)
studio. The cost to record the CD would rise to $9000. However, since this new studio works with very high
volume, production costs would fall to $2 per CD.

a. What is the break-even point for this new process?

b. Compare this process to the process proposed in the previous problem. For what volume of demand
should Mikey choose the classier studio?
a) New process break-even point is
C = 9,000 VC = 2 SP = 15 $10,395, selling 693 CD
b) For over 885 CD for over 1334 CD
a) 0 = (15-2)x – 9000
9000 = 13x
X = 692.31 VCv2+Cf2 = Vp = VCv1 + Cf1
10x – 5000 = 13x – 9000
b) 2500 = 13x – 9000 4000 = 3x
11500/13 = x X = 4000/3 = 1333.333
X = 884.61539 = 885

P6-19
Keisha has been inundated with product-of-the-month offers from various marketing companies. She is
considering joining a club that allows DVDs to be downloaded from a members-only website, but can’t
decide which membership offers the best deal. Given the cost information below, which club would you
recommend for Keisha?
Recommendation varies base on usage

A is recommended if Keisha downloads less than 25

DVDs

B is recommended if Keisha download more than

C = FC + VCx 25 but less than 35 DVDs

A: 40 + 5x C is recommended if Keisha download more than

B: 65 + 4x 35 DVDs
C: 100 + 3x
