Educational and Life of Rizal

Jose Rizal had a happy childhood growing up in the Philippines. He received an excellent education both in the Philippines and abroad, graduating with degrees from universities in Manila and Madrid. Rizal lived in Europe for 10 years, traveling extensively and furthering his education. He studied in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, England, Belgium, and the Czech Republic. During his travels, Rizal wrote novels, poems, and articles that helped fuel Philippine nationalism.

JOSE RIZAL’S CHILDHOOD BEAUTIFUL, FRUITFUL & PLEASANT MEMORIES

 Jose Rizal grew up in a happy home with the tenderest care of his parents as a fact that
he was frail, sickly and undersized boy
 Enjoy watching insects and birds in the garden
 Love to play daytime in Nipa hut built by his father
 Enjoy in listening twilight songs and sounds
 Daily Praying of Angelus every 6’o clock in the afternoon
 At the Azotea on moonlight night, he loves to hear stories about fairies, legends, tales
of buried treasures, and other fabulous stories
 He will threaten that will take away by the natural being such as aswang, tikbalang,
nuno and etc., when he did not like to eat his supper
 Brought for a walk for the relief-giving breeze, to see the fruit bearing trees, flowers,
birds and the beauty of his hometown

JOSE RIZAL’S EDUCATION/ACADEMIC BACKGROUND


EARLY EDUCATION
First Teacher: His mother Teodora Alonso Y Realonda

 At the age of 3 (three) Rizal were taught about arithmetic, alphabet and prayers in Latin,
Spanish and Tagalog
 Story of Moth
 At the age of 6 (six) Rizal became proficient in drawing, clay, modeling and carving
 Learned Latin and Spanish language from Don Leon Monroy
 Continue his studies at Binan, Laguna on June of 1869
First Private Tutors: Maestro Celestino and Lucas Padua
FORMAL EDUCATION

 He enrolled at Ateneo de Municipal de Manila and graduated with a degree in Land


Surveying and Assessment in 1877
 He studied at Faculty of Arts and Letters for a degree in Philosophy at the University of
Santo Tomas.
 He enrolled at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at University of Santo Tomas in 1878 to
specialize Ophthalmology
 He went to Spain to continue his studies and enrolled at the Universidad Central de
Madrid from where he earned his degree in medicine in 1884 and completed another
degree in Philosophy and Letters.
 He went to France to further his knowledge of ophthalmology at the University of
Heidelberg and completed his eye specialization in 1887 under the tutelage of the
famous professor Otto Becker

RIZAL’S LIFE IN EUROPE

 Rizal lived in Europe for 10 years


 He could converse more than 10 different tongues
 During his European Sojourn, he began to write a novel
RIZAL’S LIFE IN PARIS
 June 1883, Rizal left Madrid to visit Paris
 He stayed at the Hotel de Paris but then moved to a cheaper hotel. His complaint is
“that everything in Paris was expensive.”
 He was in the city for a few months from 1885-86 for his apprenticeship in
ophthalmology under Louis de Weckert and to witness the World Exposition of 1889

RIZAL’S LIFE IN HEIDELBERG, GERMANY


 Rizal arrived in Heidelberg, a historic city in Germany, on Feb. 3, 1886 from Paris
 He marked several important milestones in the city
 He attended lectures at the University of Heidelberg, wrote his nostalgic poem “A
Las Flores

RIZAL’S LIFE IN CZECH REPUBLIC, EUROPE


 Jose Rizal and his friend Dr Maximo Viola were having a grand tour of Europe and
arrived at the railroad station of Leitmeritz on May 13, 1887
 They were met by Austrian professor Ferdinand Blumentritt.
 Rizal and Viola stayed in Leitmeritz from May 13-17,1887 and stayed at Hotel Krebs.
 Rizal figures prominently in this historic city due to a sister-city agreement with
Calamba

RIZAL’S LIFE IN ROME, ITALY


 Rizal reached Rome on June 27, 1887
 Fascinated by “the sights and memories of the Eternal City.”
 He visited Turin, Milan, Venice and Florence.
 On June 29, Rizal visited for the first time the Vatican, the “City of the Popes” and
the capital of Christendom.

RIZAL’S LIFE IN LONDON


 Rizal stayed in London from May 24,1888 to March 1889
 He improved his knowledge of the English language, wrote essays and articles for
La Solidaridad and annotated the work of Antonio de Morga, the “Sucesos de las
Islas Filipinas”
RIZAL’S LIFE IN AUSTRIA
 On May 20-24 1887, Rizal paid a brief visit to Vienna and stayed at the Metropole
Hotel which used to stand at the site where the historical marker was installed.

RIZAL’S LIFE IN SWITZERLAND


 On June 19, 1887 Rizal treated Viola to a blowout. It was his 26th birthday so Rizal
and Viola spent 15 delightful days in Geneva, Switzerland
 He visited Schaffhausen, Basel, Berne, Lausanne and Geneva
 On April 13, 1888, Rizal left Japan for the United States

RIZAL’S LIFE IN BELGIUM

 Jan. 28, 1890 Rizal left Paris for Brussels, the capital of Belgium
 He stayed at 42 Rue Philippe de Champagne with where he wrote several articles
for La Solidaridad and finished writing his second novel, “El Filibusterismo,” the
sequel to “Noli Me Tangere.”
 In 1891, Rizal moved to Ghent where he published “El Filibusterismo,”
 He lived in the boarding house of the two Jacoby sisters, Catherina and Suzanna
