Before you do anything, you need to load the TI-GRAPH LINK software and CBL program files onto your
computer.
The TI-GRAPH LINK program must be installed first. There are two sources of this program: the
installation disk that comes with the TI-GRAPH LINK and the Texas Instruments web site.1
• Macintosh:
When you use the TI-GRAPH LINK for Macintosh installation disk, all you need to do is
double-click the icon according to the type of calculator being used (for example, TI-Graph
Link 2 or TI-GRAPH LINK for TI-82). Single-click the Extract button. A folder named “TI-
GRAPH LINK” containing the program file will be created on your hard drive.
www.ti.com/calc/docs/link.htm
Click on the calculator type you are using, then select the platform (Windows or Macintosh).
• The Windows program will select a folder on your hard drive to which the setup program will
be sent.
• The Macintosh version will be saved on your desktop or your hard drive depending on the
settings of the internet browser.
Leave the web site and double-click the setup icon in your Windows hard drive. The instructions
will then lead you through the installation process. On the Macintosh desktop, drag the
TI-GRAPH LINK icon to the hard drive.
Now that you have the TI-GRAPH LINK program installed on your computer, your calculator and
computer will be able to communicate.
1
The TI-GRAPH LINK (TI-GL, $55) comes with the programs, cable, and adapters. If you wish to download the
program and manuals from the TI-web site, you can purchase the TI-Graph Link Cable and adapter package (GLC,
$37) from Vernier Software.
These are the programs you will run on your calculator when performing experiments. They should be
saved on your computer before you transfer them to your calculator. There are a number of sources for the
CBL programs:
• Vernier web site (www.vernier.com). Click on “Free Stuff,” then “CBL Programs,” and choose the
type of program, calculator, and computer (Macintosh or Windows) you are using. If you prefer, you
can download the entire suite of CBL programs.
• Disks that come in the back of the Vernier lab manuals (e.g., Chemistry with CBL).2 The disks contain
group files, one for each type of TI graphing calculator (“chem-bio.83g”, “chem-bio.92g”, etc.). Each
group file contains a number of programs that comprise the data collection program for the TI
calculator. Copy or drag the file for your particular TI calculator into the TI-GRAPH LINK folder on
your hard drive. The disks also contain Word files. They provide a way for you to edit student
experiments to match your lab situation, equipment, or style of teaching. NOTE: On the Windows
platform, you will first need to double-click on the “Double-click to Install” icon before you save the
programs.
• Disks that come with other lab books, such as Real World Math with the CBL System and Exploring
Physics and Math with the CBL System.
• CBL Data Collection disks purchased separately from Vernier Software (Order Code CMEP, $12).
This package contains all the available CBL programs: PHYSICS, CHEMBIO, PHYSCI, RADIATIN, and
SPECTRO (Macintosh and IBM-compatible). Copy or drag the file for your particular TI calculator
into the TI-GRAPH LINK folder in your hard drive.
Nice work! You will now use the TI-GRAPH LINK cable and software to transfer the CBL programs from
the computer to the calculator. Move on to Step 2.

I cannot get programs to transfer to my TI-83 Are you trying to use 2nd [LINK] on the
calculator, even though the cable is good and I calculator to send the programs? Remember that
can transfer the LCD screen. a TI-83 is very different from a TI-82 in this
respect. When you send programs from the
computer to a TI-83, you do not touch the
calculator except to turn it on and set it to the
home screen..
Can I load both PHYSICS and CHEMBIO on The TI-73, 82, 83, 85 have only enough memory
my calculator? to load one of the Vernier groups. The TI-83
Plus, 86, 89, 92, and 92 Plus have enough
memory to hold both.
Can I use TI-GRAPH LINK with Windows The Texas Instruments web site

NT 4.0 version of Graph Link software you can
download for free.
I get a Link Transmission Error message. • Make certain the cable is firmly pushed into
the ports.
• You could be running Graphical Analysis at
the same time, so the modem port is already
being occupied. Quit Graphical Analysis
and try again.
• If you are using a Macintosh PowerBook,
you need to turn off AppleTalk from the
Chooser. Also, if you have an internal
modem, turn it off in the Control panel.
• Make sure you clear all the memory on your
calculator before you load the group
program.
There are four jacks located along the top and the left of the CBL unit in which you can plug Vernier or TI
probes. They are labeled CH1, CH2, CH3, and Sonic. You should use the lowest channel available. The
Sonic port is used only for the Motion Detector. All Vernier sensors other than the CBL Motion Detector
and CBL Microphone require an adapter. If the order code for Vernier sensors ends with the extension
“-DIN,” then it requires a CBL-DIN adapter. For more information about adapters, refer to Appendix B.

DATA TABLE
Now that you have collected data, would you like to print a graph? If so, go on to Step 5.
Now that you have collected data, you can, of course, analyze data with your calculator. However, if you
wish to analyze the data on a computer or print the data, you will need to use the TI-GRAPH LINK cable to
transfer the data back to your computer.
You have two options when sending data back to your computer. One option is to simply use the TI-GRAPH
LINK software for printing graphs and data lists. Alternatively, you can use the Vernier Graphical Analysis6
program along with the TI-GRAPH LINK cable. Graphical Analysis software (Macintosh or Windows
version) has a file option for importing data lists from all of the CBL-compatible TI graphing calculators.
The Graphical Analysis program is not required for data collection with the CBL. However, most people
have found it is a great tool for directly moving CBL data from the graphing calculator to the computer for
graphing and printing. It is also very good for performing mathematical modeling and finding the
relationships between variables. Most importantly, as shown below, it produces graphs that look much nicer
than the TI-GRAPH LINK program graphs.
Here are instructions for both methods of sending data to the computer:
6
Graphical Analysis for Windows (GA-WIN, $49.95). Graphical Analysis for Macintosh (GA-MAC, $49.95). The
purchase of these programs include a school or college department site license.
7
Most probes using Windows CBL programs will store data in List 1 and List 2. The Motion Detector will store
data in List 1, List 4, List 5, and List 6.
8
Most probes using Macintosh CBL programs will store data in List 1 and List 2. The Motion Detector will store
data in List 1, List 4, List 5, and List 6
Many experiments in the CBL lab manuals have a required or optional step to print a graph. Because
printing instructions vary depending on which version of TI-GRAPH LINK software is being used
(Macintosh or Windows), detailed printing directions are not provided. Before doing an experiment that
requires printing, you may want to spend time with your students going over a procedure for printing graphs.

There are a number of calculators and products available for use with the CBL system. The choice
of which depends on a number of factors, including which curriculum is being taught, the amount
of data to be collected, cost, etc.

the TI repair center to be serviced at no charge. Your original unit will not be returned but will be replaced
with a reconditioned unit.
Texas Instruments will provide free out of warranty repair for broken TI-GRAPH LINK and Data Cable
tips. Texas Instruments will also replace any calculators in which the cable end has broken off in the I/O
port. Please contact Texas Instruments before returning the product.
If the CBL you purchased from Vernier Software is more than a year old and it is a problem other than the
