The preposition ‘in’ can be used in many time expressions.

3. Before you listen

Famous firsts:
The first marathon took place in 490 BC. The story says that a Greek messenger ran from the battle
of Marathon to Athens to say that Greece won. He died shortly after.
In 105 AD a Chinese man, Cai Lun, started the paper-making business.
In 1440, the German Johannes Gutenberg invented a printing machine.
In 1875, Matthew Webb from Britain swam the English Channel in less than 22 hours.
John Dunlop invented the first tyre with air in it in 1887. It was used on bicycles and later on cars.
In 1903, The Wright Brothers flew a plane with an engine for the first time for 12 seconds in North
Carolina, USA.
In 1911, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole.
American Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly alone across the Atlantic in 1932. She flew
from Ireland to Canada in 15 hours.
In 1954, Briton Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, in a
time of 3 minutes 59.4 seconds.
In 1961, Russian Yuri Gagarin was the first man to travel into space.
In 1968, American Jim Hines was the first person to run 100 metres in under 10 seconds, in a time
of 9.95 seconds.
In 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon.
Margaret Thatcher became the first female prime minister of the UK in 1979.
