Assignment 1

This document provides an assignment for a data communications and computer networks course. It consists of 8 questions related to networking concepts like the difference between hosts and end systems, transmission rates, propagation delay, packet switching, and hybrid network topologies. Students are asked to answer questions about topics such as whether collisions are possible on an HFC downstream channel, the advantages of circuit switching over packet switching, calculating propagation and transmission times, drawing a hybrid star/bus-ring topology, and calculating file transfer time over a packet switched network.

Assignment # 1

Due Date: 16 March 2021 Total Marks: 10

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Important Note: Copying Assignment or a part, from any source would be considered as a
serious offense that will results in Zero Marks.

1) What is the difference between a host and an end system? List several different types of end
systems. Is a Web server an end system?

2) Is HFC transmission rate dedicated or shared among users? Are collisions possible in a
downstream HFC channel? Why or why not?

3) What advantage does a circuit-switched network have over a packet-switched network? What
advantages does TDM have over FDM in a circuit-switched network?

4) What are the propagation time and the transmission time for a 2.5-kbyte message (an e-mail) if
the bandwidth of the network is 1 Gbps? Assume that the distance between the sender and the
receiver is 12,000 km and that light travels at 2.4 × 108 m/s.

5) How long does it take a packet of length 1,000 bytes to propagate over a link of distance 2,500
km, propagation speed m/s, and transmission rate 2 Mbps? More generally, how long does it take
a packet of length L to propagate over a link of distance d, propagation speeds, and transmission
rate R bps? Does this delay depend on packet length? Does this delay depend on transmission rate?

6) Draw a hybrid network topology in such a way that a star backbone connects the bus and ring
topologies to another ring backbone.

7) Consider two hosts, A and B, connected by a single link of rate R bps. Suppose that the two
hosts are separated by m meters, and suppose the propagation speed along the link is s meters/sec.
Host A is to send a packet of size L bits to Host B. Suppose s=2*109, L=1024 bits, and R=256
kbps. Find the distance m so that dprop equals dtrans?

8) Given the following network in Figure 1, find out the file transfer time in case of Packet
switching Network?
M=10^6 bits,
H=100 bits,
L=10000 bits,
c=10^9 bits/sec,
δ=5 msec,
n=4,
setup processing time of σ = 1 at each hop
